My dad's relationship with the night sky was fraught. I'm not talking about the sky in general, not even wide open spaces, the night sky. He hated space. If he'd made the mistake of being out at night in clear weather he would tense right up, goosebumps all over. Loved when it was overcast. It wasn't even because of the darkness; he used to compare it to my mother's fear of the open sea, an unending filament from which any manner of thing might emerge from any which way. After she disappeared he thought, at first, that she'd walked out on us. Then, he graduated to "the night sky must've took her". He pretty quickly spiraled after that, always home before evening — only out again in the afternoon. I don't think he saw the night again once before he died.
I was reminded of him today because it was his fear that introduced me to the paranormal. I was younger, and for a while I actually believed his paranoid rationalizations for what really happened. But something happened to her, she didn't just leave us. There are extraordinary things out there, and I know that because today I found one of those things, and I'm calling on all of our astronomers, amateur or otherwise, for help.
To summarize: I've been nocturnal for a almost a week, trying to get a good look at Neptune. I'm new to this and sadly I'm basically eying a little blue smudge with a fifty buck hand-me-down, comforted only by the blanketing warmth of the summer's night. Helpfully at least it's letting me stay out as long as I'd like, with clear skies to boot. Why have I been doing this? Stupid question, space is awesome, I don't need a reason. However if one were to take both our and Neptune's orbits into account, one could discover that the planet was going to occult a star (meaning block from view). I mean this isn't a huge deal or anything but if anyone's not very familiar with astronomy, this almost never happens. Neptune is large but not that large. Its orbit takes centuries and its apparent size just doesn't add up to much so far away. It was a once in a lifetime moment and I wanted to see it for myself. So, I did. Except I didn't.
That star (couldn't find a name) the planet was supposed to have occulted? As I predicted it passed in front of it, but the star is still shining. Like the planet isn't actually there or something!
I'm in Europe (not actually but you don't need to know where I live. As long as it's nighttime where you are right now that's all that matters!). Can anyone else confirm this is real? I've only been into this for like a month or two so I'm not very confident and I don't own a camera so I can't post a picture. Please someone confirm and get back to this thread ASAP with a picture.

Yeah, it's fine.
And we still don't know. Obviously I'm no longer taking my dad's word on her having been snatched away by the night sky. However, the circumstances around her disappearance were definitely suspicious. She was in the early stages of alzheimer's and the police basically just said that she'd probably walked off and then never looked much deeper into it. She wasn't as far gone as dad told them she was. Even if she got confused sometimes, she was still sharp, sharper than anyone I've known. For context it was only like 9 or 10 years ago that she working abroad at CERN, helping create the WWW.
I saw her off on her nightly walk, blue was still her favorite color, she was still her old self. Smart, comforting, sarcastic, making fun of my dad. She went outside. Dad came home later, asking me where she decided to go today. I'll always regret not having asked.
So I'm not sure, but I know she didn't just leave. Someone, or something, made sure she never made it home. And I'm betting on something. Something we don't yet understand. My dad was paranoid, misguided, but I think he was onto something. I'm pretty sure it was the guilt that killed him, hiding from it like he did. But I think it's better that we learn more about what we fear, so that we don't have to be scared anymore.

I have to side with OP again, and I'm becoming increasingly convinced that they've actually found something. I checked my star maps again… there is no star behind Jupiter. So this can't be starlight inexplicably being permitted passage through the planet. Which can only mean one of two things:
1. That we're all actually confusing a probe for something it isn't, and that OP somehow correctly spotted an occultation of a star by Neptune while also simultaneously confusing the planet with Jupiter and discovering an entirely unrelated source of light.
2. That OP really did see something by Neptune, but that it was never a star at all. That it moved from one planet to the other. Meaning, the light OP saw, the one we are looking at right now, is not on the other side of Jupiter. It's in between Jupiter and us.
