I joined the site way back in 2018, posted a couple SCPs that are somehow still up, left for about seven years, and now I'm back and hanging out when I can. I'm hardly anything special or noticeable compared to some of the writing giants on this site, but the SCP Foundation has always fascinated me as such a unique collaborative experiment in writing. I've always wanted to contribute to it, even in a small way. My writing is all over the place when it comes to genre or style as I just try to write whatever I feel like writing, but I do enjoy taking a crack at horror here and there. I check the discussion pages on the stuff I've posted semi-regularly, so if you have any questions about a particular work, don't hesitate to ask me there. I also like to give critiques and I'm always up for a good critswap, so feel free to hit me up here on the site or on the Discord!

I had a lot of fun with this one. It was initially inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s “Annabel Lee” poem, hence the title, but then I came up with how the anomaly would work, then I found a painting of the same lighthouse I was using from the main image that could pass as a historical piece, so I made this lighthouse an old, wicked thing, and it just spiraled from there. If someone falls from it and dies and it vanishes without a trace, would such a case be solved? If this lighthouse is able to teleport anywhere, why not the moon? What would it leave behind? And then all the Irish mythology came in and spiced it up. The D-Class log was a real struggle because I wasn’t sure what I wanted it to truly reveal. We get a lot of reveals beforehand, so what would make the video log necessary. At first, it revealed that the Tuatha Dé Danann, or whoever they may be, were trying to build a moon door back home with bones and such, but a critique I got while drafting got me to realize that revelation seemed a little boring. After all, where was home? Why does it matter? So then, maybe they aren’t trying to get back to some other place that the reader doesn’t care about. Maybe they’re trying to get to here. Our home. Readers definitely care about that, I hope. And voilà! We’ve got ourselves an article.

My return to form. With college and other life stuff happening, I wasn’t really able to be part of the site for a long while. Seven years, in fact. But out of nowhere, in the throes of September, I got the itch to write an SCP. I knew from the get-go that I wanted to mess with the format. In particular, I wanted to capture that chatroom feel and portray the whole article through a conversation. Initially, it was just going to be the two employees, but getting into it, it seemed more entertaining to have the skip itself take a more active role in the article, literally and figuratively. Then, of course, if the anomaly is able to talk through the computer, what else can it do? What else can it manipulate? That was the big thing. Manipulation. Jameson is an ambitious man who is getting manipulated, and maybe I wanted some of the manipulation to reach the reader too in a sort of meta way. The format may not be for everyone, but I personally think the narrative wouldn’t work any other way. You need to be in the thick of it, even if not everything gets explained in the most elegant way.

With this skip, I went with something lighthearted. For most of my skips so far, I usually look for a picture first on Wikimedia Commons or somewhere. If I can use an image, I will, and those images often inspire what the article will become. This skip was no different. I found the picture of the Trecynon tramway bridge, researched where it was, and went from there. Luckily, a lot of people seemed to like this one, and I’m very glad for that. I’m not sure why I went with a painter though, but I do know why I made him deaf and mute. Otherwise, what’s the point of conveying messages through the paintings if he could just talk?

My first SCP. How embarrassing. Don’t read it haha.

But seriously, I’m surprised this one is still kicking around. I don’t really remember much about what I was inspired by or what I was thinking when I wrote this. It was seven years ago as of writing this commentary, but I do know that I kinda played it safe since it was my first skip. I went with something simple: a phone that might or might not predict when someone dies. Nothing extravagant, nothing poignant, but looking back, I’m glad I made the lady on the other end of the line impatient. I’d like to think the Grim Reaper is an impatient person, running from here and there, always preoccupied. I’d be surprised if they could even remember the last soul they reaped. Does the farmer recall every grain of wheat they have cut, every seed they have sown?
