Item #: SCP-L501
Primary Object Class: Euclid
Secondary Object Class: Anathema
Special Containment Procedures: The existence of SCP-L501 is not known to the wider Foundation. This document has been intentionally omitted from the main Foundation Database due to the nature of SCP-L501; a minimal number of physical documents in hidden data caches and discreet files on isolated terminals are the only sources of information regarding the anomaly.
Access to information concerning SCP-L501 is heavily restricted so as to not expose supervising personnel to its true nature. A small research and containment team, composed of as few personnel as possible, are to maintain informational and situational containment for SCP-L501, as well as recruit new members, amnesticise those believed to be exposed, and suspend the involvement of suspicious personnel.
Members of this group are to manage a list of paraphernalia associated with but not revealing the nature of SCP-L501. The team is to regularly monitor activities above the Veil to identify potential matches with these keywords; Special Task Force Omicron-1 ("Comfort the Disturbed") are to be deployed in the event of a suspected breach of containment.
Do not attempt to infer the nature of SCP-L501 from this document or external sources1.
Description: SCP-L501 is a specific action or sequence of actions that can be performed by one individual2 to another3. SCP-L501 is invariably demarcated by all who are aware of the anomaly's contents to be the most disturbing scenario a sapient being can possibly inflict upon another, even exceeding extreme crimes known to the public. SCP-L501 is obscured in the human consciousness by a unique memory-affecting hazard: it is almost impossible for an individual to gain lucidity of the details of SCP-L501 should they not have been exposed externally4.
The exact details of SCP-L501 and the necessary series of steps to carry out the act appear to be so misaligned with basic human nature that it is almost infeasible for a person to come to realise what SCP-L501 entails in a closed informational system — the vast majority of memetic contamination by SCP-L501 occurs after exposure to evidence from prior executions of the anomaly, occasionally found in archaeological dig sites or rare books. Knowing about the existence of SCP-L501 but not what it directly entails, such as from reading this document, is an infohazard that makes the observer magnitudes more likely to come to realise the nature of the anomaly. This is due to their subconscious mind attempting to grasp the massive moral weight of the phenomenon.
It remains unclear whether performing SCP-L501 necessitates the use of an anomalous action or whether the only anomaly relating to SCP-L501 is simply the fact that it almost cannot be conceived of by an individual using only their imagination. Regardless, SCP-L501 seems ill-fitted to the human brain — under strict informational quarantine, previous victims have described the anomaly as being "not of this world".
Insight into the experiences of those with knowledge of the true nature of the process have revealed that SCP-L501 is "worse than any other transgression", describing the anomaly as "ineffably depraved" and "too perturbing for [the] brain to properly fathom". Those exposed to information regarding the contents of SCP-L501 experience entirely unique reactions that differ between individuals — SCP-L501 can linger at the centre of a witnesses' mind for months after exposure if untreated; multiple trials of amnestics may be required due to the extreme morbidity of the act.
Careful piecewise analysis of evidence left behind from previous renderings of SCP-L501 has revealed a set of paraphernalia associated with the anomaly, along with an estimated degree of certainty as to whether the property is relevant to the anomaly beyond what is expected. Do not attempt to infer the nature of SCP-L501 from this list.
Discovery: During December of 2000, a bizarre call to emergency services was intercepted by the SCP Foundation at the residence of one ██████ █████████7 — the caller was in a state of extreme distress but their speech was largely unintelligible. Suspecting a form of mind-affecting anomaly, a nearby subset of MTF Eta-10 ("See No Evil") was dispatched, consisting of three experienced personnel.
En route to the location of the incident, the caller managed to calm themselves slightly, purporting they had been "gobbed [sic]" and [DATA EXPUNGED]8; a second garbled voice could be faintly heard through the audio, confirming this. The Foundation call operator laughed quizzically upon realising the nature of what was occurring, before vomiting into a nearby wastebasket. It was decided not to inform MTF Eta-10 of the situation due to fears it could pre-emptively compromise the efficacy of the mission.
Personnel arrived at the location shortly after, bearing their weapons and heading for the basement upon hearing a distorted voice from within — the victim had apparently retreated to this part of the house under an esoteric influence. Visual contact was immediately made with the victim in the process of undergoing SCP-L501, causing one member of the team to dry heave violently and another to shiver rapidly before fainting. The other member of Eta-10 was apparently unfazed at first, and in a strange stupor, attempted to initiate SCP-L501 with the other conscious task force member before being fatally shot in the head. It is unknown whether SCP-L501 has a compulsive effect.
The shoulder-mounted cameras of Eta-10 were quickly disabled remotely by command to prevent the memetic hazard presented by SCP-L501 spreading further; amnestics were quickly distributed to the witnesses save for Dr. Xiu Zhang, who assumed control of SCP-L501 containment, secretly recruited other researchers, and wrote this document. She ordered the residence to be destroyed by a drone-launched missile, deeming the task force members unrecoverable — the ultimate fate of all present at the scene in their final moments remains unknown.
A partially-redacted still frame from the footage of an MTF Eta-10 member has been saved below for research purposes. Do not attempt to infer the nature of SCP-L501 from this image.
