The investigation report of SCP-CN-3969 is under evaluation.

The Foundation tried to end the possibility of doomsday. Unfortunately they succeeded.

Research Note - 1-01

I'm trying to organize words to express my shock when receiving the message above.

Let me introduce myself, I, Dr. Gernica, just finished my training three months ago. Now I'm helping my mentor with a theoretical research project in the shabby site located in nowhere. I just finished my dinner when the phone rang, and it took me twenty minutes and five verification codes to open this email. Then, I saw the message contained fewer than two hundred words, and the sender was the Overseer Council.

I just checked that, the SCP list, which contains thousands of lines, and all the "[Insufficient Clearance]" are turned into Item Numbers. I can just read anything like reading some kind of online novels.

What the [REDACTED]?

Research Note - 1-02

And, why the things I just wrote in my memo is written in this file and being considered as research notes? And I can't delete that? No way.

@Dr_Gernica, I think you are interested in "I can help you to know more".

That's so [REDACTED] nice of you my dear little assistance AI summarize helper, told me all the information you know, and if you can tell O5 I can't do this, thank you.

Okay. First, SCP-CN-3969 is a very special anomaly, the Foundation's confidentiality regulation requires the investigation into this kind of anomaly must be conducted by only one person. What's more, due to the abnormal nature of this item, traditional investigation methods, such as assembling a special team, are unlikely to work. All in all, this task can only be finished by you.

For the latter requirement from you, sorry I can't obey, because I also have no power to contact the Overseer Council; Only when the investigation is finished, I can send the report to them.

Oh, OK, fine, so what abnormal nature does it have that only I can do this?

Continue to read, you'll know that.

I really hope to get this thing done as soon as possible…, Tidal.AIC, where should we start?

I already found some information related to SCP-CN-3969. This information was buried in the Foundation's deep databases and hard to find by conventional methods. And just like the description says, their antimemetic effects are very strong, and you almost can't remember anything without injecting Mnestics.

You can first check out these barely decent files, I will try to clean out other files' antimemes and cognitive hazards.

William Fritz
The State University of New York at Stony Brook, Long Island
1950/8/28

O5-1
[Classified], Ohio

Overseer Council:

You have heard about the accident of SCP-2000 recently. The Yellowstone Project administration has known the operational status of the few remaining subsystems we have through the recent work of Dr. Thaddeus Xyank. The situation is far from optimistic. In fact, we have to make the most pessimistic prediction: SCP-2000 won't be disabled in fifty years or later, instead, it will be disabled in just a few years in the near future.

Based on that, someone may think that we should build a new SCP-2000. However, this idea is assessed, and it won't work. Because the intrinsic reason for SCP-2000's poor performance is not our engineering technology's flaw (Although we must admit that many flaws in SCP-2000's design can be prevented), but its fundamental principle. SCP-2000 itself is a fragile Doomsday facility, although we have confidence in evading nuclear bombs or antimatter, it is still not a doomsday failsafe that is good enough.

The assumptions above are based on the following truth:

1. Among the possible doomsday scenarios the Department of E.O.W put forward, 75% of them relate to hyper-scientific elements like extraterrestrial civilizations3, Divine Beings, Pataphysics, Thaumaturgy, and Physics that are beyond current understanding. Doomsday scenario caused by one or multiple of them won't be coped with by SCP-2000.

2. Even though the Doomsday Scenarios that can be explained by current theories, there are also elements that are hard to deal with like celestial impact and supernatural bio-hazard. Doomsday scenarios caused by these kinds of elements can be dealed on some degree, but the chance of civilization's survival is remote.

3. From the current situation of the Foundation, the resources needed to build another SCP-2000 would lead to a series of problems out of control, and the engineering cycle is far longer than repairing the original SCP-2000, the "Doomsday void4 would be inevitable.

The administration advises that, start a new engineering project by the Foundation, exploring the possibility of setting up a totally stable and absolutely reliable doomsday failsafe, which is the "Ultimate Deus Ex Machina"(UDEM) Project put forward by the Department of E.O.W, and completely replace SCP-2000 with it. In the DOEOW's opinion, although the Foundation may have no capacity to build UDEM, the new failsafe whose aim was UDEM would improve the awkward situation SCP-2000 has brought to us.

I recently acknowledged that the Global Occult Coalition has planned to conduct new nuclear tests. Considering the unstable elements gradually piled up in the environment, perhaps the Council should decide related things as soon as possible, and assign people to do the preliminary work.

Your faithfully
William Fritz

Seems there is no actual information about the project itself?

In fact, the O5 Council approved the proposal together had already demonstrated UDEM's significance to the Foundation at that time. From this point forward, we can find relevant information more easily. I have already found some scattered meeting records and engineering documents, but I think what you need are some more general files, like project plans.

Considering possible cognitive hazards, you should ask your site's Director for Mnestics and memetic vaccines.

Is there any possibility that… The anomaly nature of these files is the clue? What do you think?

You made a valid point. After all, conventional encryption is enough for most confidential information. Although every time I finish a task, a huge part of my memory would be erased, I can still tell you that among the information I know, there are no previous examples that the Foundation intentionally attaches information hazards to its own databases.

Research Note - 1-04

I have already read several documents, and still have no clue.

Tidal.AIC claims that "I also don't know why you're chosen, perhaps you have some special gifts, like getting a full score in memory tests when being assessed". Honest speaking, I really don't know how to investigate this thing.

The drugs of cognitive hazards protection are within my reach. After eating this, my head hurts, but without this thing, my head would be more hurt possibly. I've really had enough.

Research Note - 1-05

Sadly, the SCP lists are of no help, especially those don't mark to contain memetic hazards. Don't ask me how I knew that…

Another thing, em, my personal socializing was cut off. Classification needs, I understand.

To Dr. Fedorov:

The Department of Physics won. The Overseers' instruction mentioned "Don't want UDEM to have thaumaturgy parts" specifically. You and your scruffy Soviets won the bid.
I don't have anything more to say. Hope the Foundation will get your brilliant ideas done. Wish you good luck.

Webster Sherwood

Research Note - 1-06

Qinghai, em…and Nevada. The files I've found were basically about these two places, all were some kind of task reports. We can see that the Foundation's classification works are pretty good, after hundreds of pages I still have no idea of what they were doing. Building accelerators? What's the point? It caused my head to hurt more…

UDEM now has a more formal code name—Project No.634. It doesn't feel like the name chosen by the Foundation.

Other clues… nuclear physicists, and pioneering physicists were almost being moved to a mysterious base in Nevada. On satellite images, there's just a desert, it was torn down completely. The Berkeley Lab's scientists were all moved, especially the professionals of nuclear physics—the one who has the highest ranking is Seaborg (Glenn Theodore Seaborg), who is the great one in the field of superheavy elements, he seems to have a direct meeting with the Overseers.

Of course there are some design blueprints, although I don't understand… Well, in all means, they are more likely building a bomb instead of building some machina.

Overseer Council:

Recently we have had a little obstacle in our works.

We underestimated the complexity of Project No.634, of course the problem isn't so severe that we can't push the task forward, but the Department of Physics expressed that they're lacking hands. Fedorov told me that we should try our best to get more potential pioneering physicists. Perhaps he hasn't realized that the academic team that participated in Project 634 is already pretty big, hiring more people can even affect the stability of the veil.

And, Dr. Christopher Zartion told me that we need to consider letting the Aerospace Department to participate. After I discussed this with Fedorov, due to the nature of AN-███.1, the DOEOW confirmed that it is necessary. Without doubt, this would cause the resource demand of Project 634 to have a further increase.

The detailed report will be sent in a couple of minutes. As the possible most important project of the Foundation in this century, I sincerely hope the Overseers would give Project No.634 a higher priority.

William Fritz

To Dr. William Fritz:

The Council noticed the report exposed some flaws in the implementation of Project 634. We suggest holding a Sub-summit in Area-634.

Secure, Contain, Protect.

Overseer Council

Christopher Zartion? The leader of the department of bio-whatever?

Yes. Dr. Christopher Zartion is the leader of the Department of Research and Development of bio-technology, he participated in the design of early versions of Bright/Zartion Hominid Replicator. It is unsurprising for him to appear as one of the managers of Project No.634.

But why did he propose to let the Aerospace Department participate in Project 634—— and the whole Project No.634 doesn't seem to have anything related to biology.

Dr. Christopher Zartion has a great contribution in the construction and maintenance of SCP-2000, his research areas are also not limited to biology. We can say that, apart from William, he's the only one who knows SCP-2000 best. Obviously, he could avoid the product of Project No.634, which is UDEM(SCP-CN-3969-Thaumiel), to have critical flaws like SCP-2000.

Is he planning to move the entire device into space?

We cannot rule out this possibility. And, I found the records of the Sub-summit the Overseer Council mentioned. It should solve some of your questions on Project No.634.

That's——so——long——

But it is some critical information. The dialogues in several minutes at least exposed part of UDEM, for example, the heavy-fusion bomb AN-███.1 seems to be an important part of UDEM.

My major wasn't nuclear physics. I can't understand those things!

Do you know the basic principle of atomic bombs? The nuclear fission chain reaction caused energy release that is uncontrollable, and the hydrogen bomb uses a fission bomb as the nuclear fusion trigger. The fuel materials of nuclear fusion are deuterium and tritium, these two isotopes fuse into helium and release energy, which causes an energy release on a larger scale.

I have learned that in Physics class in high school… but what the heck is a heavy-fusion bomb, I remember the binding energy or something else became a minus number starting from iron, so it can't fuse…

It can fuse, but the fusion will absorb energy instead of releasing energy. I guess the heavy-fusion bomb partially breaks the limitation, it is possible that it uses a hydrogen bomb as the reaction source to cause the fusion of heavy elements. This kind of fusion is likely to produce extreme heat, although its total energy released has become less, but the destruction would be greater than hydrogen bomb. Of course, this is my conclusion deduced from the records, it may not be correct.

Is that considered as popularize science to me?

To you, yes.

A lot of O5 were present at the summit. But they don't say many words.

In fact the Overseers, didn't say anything in the first half of the Summit.

Yeah, there are other interesting things. Rockets that weigh over ten thousand tons, GOC chose to collaborate with us… and still I don't understand what's the relationship between producing nukes and saving the world.

I have accessed all databases within my capacity, and I really can't reach a reasonable explanation. But I hope you don't think of some conspiracy theories, such as the aim of the Foundation is actually to destroy the world, or the Foundation is doing thaumaturgy engineering secretly, these both can't explain why GOC decided to collaborate.

…GOC accepted? They really have carriers that at ten-thousand-ton class?

The test detonation record of the nuke is accessible

What?

Is that surprising? That's the Fifties, five years later the first man-made satellite would enter orbit, seventeen years later humans could reach the moon, thirty years later we could make space shuttles. The world behind the veil is more advanced in the beginning, even the UDEM can be tried, not to mention aerospace projects based on conventional technology.

I have no doubt that even the people inside the veil have the capacity to build carriers at the same scale, because there are such precedents (remain on paper)11, You need to believe that people can do anything to prove who is superior during the Cold War.

…

There's still a part of the record left. The participation of a new department makes the discussion of this part become more fierce, O5 has talked alot on the Sub-summit, which is unusual.

Ok, let me see what they have talked about.

Hold on, let me check the timestamp…

Dr. Gernica?

Dr.Gernica, you haven't started a new conversation in the past twelve hours. Do you need any help?

Dr. Gernica, your abnormal behaviour might cause the investigation to end. Please reply as soon as possible.

Just say something.

Research Note - 2-09

Er. I think something is off. Look at this.

Research Note - 2-03
Put simply, in the following new personnel, there are some remarkable names: Fred Hoyle, William Fowler, Geoffrey Burbidge and Margaret Burbidge. People who were familiar with the history of Physics would naturally find that the Foundation actually hired the authors of B2FH.
These people addressed the Stellar nucleosynthesis theory, which explained how elements heavier than iron appear in a star system. But the connections between this theory and Project 634 is still confusing, perhaps Fedorov thinks that the physical process of the denotation of AN-███.1 needs this theory to explain?

…anyway…I didn't wrote this……oops.

@Tidal.AIC, who wrote this?

Isn't it by you?

That wasn't me!

Your behaviour has been under strict monitoring. I'm sure that these words were typed by you on the keyboard.

What is stellar nucleosynthesis? What's the relationship between it and Project 634—— or, what's the principle of UDEM?

Addressing a lot of questions in a short time will put me in a difficult situation. But I can try to answer it one by one:

1. Stellar nucleosynthesis is a theory addressed by Fred Hoyle in 1946. After further advances, it became the mainstream theory in astrophysics. This theory, especially the parts refined by B2FH, thinks high-mass stars through sequential multi-stage fusion reaction to generate iron element, and the elements whose atomic number is greater than iron is generated by the supernova whose core collapsed through the R/S process. 2.——

Stop! Could you describe it in a more vivid way?

Ok, I will use a more vivid way to describe the stellar nucleosynthesis. We all know that the sun is a giant nuclear reaction furnace, it releases energy by continously fusion hydrogen into helium. When the hydrogen burns out, the hellium with great masses will collapse by itself, the great pressure makes helium start to fuse. The reaction of helium releases less energy, and burns faster—at this point the life of the sun ended, its temperature will drop, the outer layer expands and the inner layer shrinks, eventually it will become a white dwarf that nobody knows. It has moved forward to the eighth element oxygen, then falls into silence.

But stars with greater masses have the capability to walk down this road. The carbon got squeezed together, crossed the coulomb barrier and became neon, neon became magnesium, magnesium became silicon, the heavier the element, the shorter the time it holds. Helium can burn for millions of years, but from silicon to iron would only take 14 days. Now we have moved forward to the twenty-sixth element on the periodic table.

The fusion reaction would cause a lot of free neutrons, the iron element would absorb these fast or slow neutrons and form heavier elements, this is the R/S process. For those stars with an enormous mass, near the end of their lives, the core structure collapses fast and shatters, eventually become a beautiful firework—a supernova. Under these extreme conditions, the R/S process makes us move forward to the heaviest element in nature: the ninety-second, uranium. Elements after that won't be left in any cases, they are too unstable, they would completely decay before the planet forms.

In this term, the nuclear explosion of AN-███.1 is an emulation of a dying star in fact.

I think so, the heavy nuclear fusion environment of AN-███.1 is similiar with stellar nucleosynthesis. The denotation parts of AN-███.1 including some hydrogen bombs at one-hundred-million level, perhaps this provided a similar extreme physical environment.

But I still have no idea how UDEM works——Does it just rely on it? Generating heavier elements? What does this have to do with saving the world…

According to the information we got, although we are still unable to explain this, your hypothesis is likely to be correct. I will try to fetch more information on this route. Now, the investigation continues.

Research Note - 2-14

Something is wrong.

Every so often, about once a day, there would appear some "Research Note" I have no memories. I can't delete them, only to hide them, leaving those unfamiliar is indeed makes me scared.

Tidal would ask me why I haven't chat with it for a long time. But I really had no impression, the investigation has already lasted for two weeks, now I'm getting more and more confused on the whole situation——

To O5-1:

The project went smoothly. I think I can finally report some good news: Two UDEM devices have been completed in Qinghai and Nevada at the same time. Of course there are a lot of follow-up works to be done, we are still discussing whether to install the defense system at the same level of SCP-2000—— replicate them using the technology we have now, to ensure their absolute safety.

I am doing some personal research these days—for this purpose I have to learn some new computer knowledge, you know that the technology used on AK9MKII is pretty advance. I have always hoped to make eschatology a more precise, strict subject, although I think, to some extent, UDEM shattered the wish. Of course, I don't mind sacrificing personal wishes for UDEM, since UDEM—— or SCP-CN-3969, it is the great work of eschatology.

Or the final project.

Secure, Contain, Protect.

William Fritz

Research Note - 2-15

——Directions. The key is direction, thoughts, whatever you love to call it, but I really think I've gone in the wrong direction. The principles of UDEM are sure to include stellar nucleosynthesis, but it also include other things. Relativity. Quantum mechanics. Dame, where did Tidal lead my thoughts? Why I forgot the Summit at Area-62, that's the key! The underlying principle of UDEM is sure to be designed at first, stellar nucleosynthesis is the implementation method, it's the means not the aim!

The real principle, it should be called, let me find…I should look at the original record, two weeks ago…

To Dr. Prokopiy Fedorov:

Discussing others behind them is a shameful thing, however——I had no choice but to write you this letter. If you take this letter to William, I won't have any complaint.

Let me go directly to the subject. William Fritz recently behaved very abnormally. Unlike what he was when leading 634…I'm sure that something terrible happened to him, ever since he stepped down from the front line. I heard that he went to the Department of Physics very frequently these days, half of the uptime of AK9 has been used by him to run some eschatology models. I'm not suspecting he's doing something bad, and I can't suspect him, but…I was really worried about the psychological situation of William.

If possible, talk with him. I remember you two got along quite well, especially during meetings.

Best wishes,
Christopher Zartion

Research Note - 2-16

I found it. "Decoherent histories guiding system".

The subject of Department of Physics…"Mortise-Tenon"."orientedly decide past histories almost at will".

The answer was there at the beginning. I don't believe it won't notice.

But, now we have both the answer and the question, I have no idea about the process. Where to find the last jigsaw?

To Dr. Christopher Zartion:

Don't worry about William. He was like this when working at Yellowstone.

But——let me explain in this way, I'm really worried about this, not William, but how he became this. William is among the people who discovered Yellowstone's flaws first. We can realize that from the report to Overseers and that letter, he is sensitive to the potential risks of this kind of important project. Yes, it means he is likely——very likely——to think SCP-CN-3969 has some potential flaws.

Also, I need to admit that those physicists who have spoken to him all look extremely grim. I haven't asked what they have talked about, possibly related to that eschatology model.

I'm hoping that our efforts won't be in vain. See you later in the old place, we have to talk about this.

Prokopiy Fedorov

Research Note - 2-17

I think I've found the breaking point. Qinghai.

Research Note - 2-18

Where is Area-CN-27?

To O5-1:

Recently I'm very anxious about the calculation result of AK9MKII.

…Anyway, the problem is way worse than I think. I have the responsibility to told the concerns to you, because this actually proved that SCP-CN-3969 has a grave problem—not on principle or engineering, it's something more complex.I have no confidence in dealing with it properly.

William Fritz

Research Note - 3-01

Now it is sure that Area-CN-27 can't be found on maps, because that was an underground site. Right below me.

Technically, the whole UDEM is divided into two sub-projects: AN-███.1 and——the more mysterious activation device, the former one just produced only a dozen or so units and then stopped, and the latter one was equipped in almost every site. I think so, because the Overseer Council said that…"Every site should equip a personnel that can remember this device".

It is certain that the three complete UDEM is installed in Site-01, Area-634, and…Area-CN-27.

To Dr. William Fritz:

I will come to you as soon as possible.

Overseer Council, O5-1

@Dr_Gernica

?

The investigation is now ended. I've already gathered enough information, the complete investigation report will be submitted to the Overseer Council after you give me the termination order.

What?

Please give me the termination order.

Huh, why it is ended? What's the problem with you?

You are the main person to conduct the investigation, but the investigation report of SCP-CN-3969 needs to be generated by me. The Overseer Council doesn't care about who gives the investigation report, so in this kind of investigation, after enough information is obtained, it is common for the assisting AIC to finish the report and submit.

It is true that your role is also important, because assistance AIC doesn't have self-awareness, and can't direct the direction of the investigation. In other words, I'm just ahead of you a step. But since the report is generated and sealed, sorry I can't present its content to you. After the task ended, you will be given amnestics and be given reasonable compensation.

Gernica, please cooperate with my work.

Gernica, are you still here?

I made a mistake.

I know that O5-1 can't just stop the UDEM. It equals to admit his failures.

Building UDEM is a mistake, so I chose to make up for it actively. On the Christmas of 1952, at which time most personnel came home. Obviously they won't suspect what I was going to do, but reducing the number of witnesses is obviously better.

There were three UDEM at that time, the systems were completely independent of each other. I was in Nevada at that time. I could only consider breaking one of those—Obviously, now I realized it is completely pointless, that even can leads to the activation of the other two UDEM. But I was at the edge of collapse, so I couldn't think anything more.

I'm going to destroy the power supply of the nukes, and neutralize a part of SCP-CN-3969. I'm not from the Department of Nuclear Physics, I don't have its full design blueprints, but with sufficient clearance I can go to the core area of the device, and switch the system to debug mode, to ensure UDEM won't enable lethal defense measures. To be honest, I don't understand why I'm doing that at that time, or going to do.

Because when I got to the core area, someone was already there.
