SCP-518-JP, bunched in Area-518-JP

Item #: SCP-518-JP

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: Within a radius of 10 kilometres around Area-518-JP, where SCP-518-JP is clustered, is designated as a no-go and no-fly zone. Any trespassing by people or aircraft should be prevented. Area-518-JP is to be enclosed with barrier wall, so that SCP-518-JP cannot detect aircraft. 10 guards are to patrol the perimeter, and if any intruder is found, they are to be detained and released outside of the no-go zone after amnestic treatment. To prevent the expansion of Area-518-JP, harvesting sprouts of SCP-518-JP and cutting off the underground rhizome shall be carried out on a daily basis.

Description: SCP-518-JP is a bamboo plant (Bambuseae Kunth ex Dumort.), and does not exhibit any genetic abnormalities. SCP-518-JP grows naturally in Mount █████, ██████ Prefecture. The area SCP-518-JP grows in is designated as Area-518-JP. Currently, █████ stems of bamboo have been identified to be growing. SCP-518-JP buds continually, regardless of season or weather, to expand Area-518-JP.

When an aircraft with a power engine or a propulsion engine (hereinafter referred to as a target) approaches within 5 km of SCP-518-JP, the anomaly becomes activated. Experiments have proven that this anomalous property does not react to the aircraft without power engine and a propulsion engine, such as blimps, and flying lifeforms. An activated SCP-518-JP shakes off its branches and launches itself upwards, separating from its roots. The launched SCP-518-JP is directed at the target with formidable tracking capability and speed, which exceeds 7██ kilometers per second. Despite this hypersonic speed, shockwaves or noise from a sonic boom do not occur, although the reason for this is unknown. Interception or avoidance of launched bamboo stem is almost impossible due to its tracking ability and speed. In most cases, the target is shot down. When the target crashes, SCP-518-JP becomes inactive. Once launched or cut down, the SCP-518-JP does not become activated again. It is also not activated in the presence of obstacles. It is unknown how SCP-518-JP detects the targets, but their detection aility can be hindered by deploying physical obstacles.

SCP-518-JP was discovered by the Foundation by the investigation after the report of “burnt bamboos are scattered” at the scene of the crash of ██ Air Flight ███ on 199█/██/██. Area-518-JP was undergoing deforestation by development, so it is believed that the aircraft flying above the SCP-518-JP grove was shot with no obstacles blocking the view of SCP-518-JP. The Foundation designated the Area-518-JP and its surroundings as no-go and no-fly zone, treated all persons involved in the crash of ██ Air Flight ███ with amnestics, to establish the containment of SCP-518-JP.

Addendum: On 199█/██/██, after the discovery of SCP-518-JP, ██ skeletonized corpses were found in the center of Area-518-JP. The bodies wore Imperial Japanese Army uniforms, and rusty daggers were found alongside them, so their cause of death was presumed to be a mass suicide via hara-kiri. A note was found in the pocket of the uniform worn by one of the corpses. The contents of the note were as follows.

我果てど 國を守らん 秋の竹
We, autumn bamboo defending the fatherland even after life
