The list of individuals who may have viewed SCP-4889-JP is shared with the Foundation web crawlers and AICs; should any anomalous phenomena potentially linked to SCP-4889-JP be detected, the responsible staff member at Site-43 (currently Dr. Lillian Shelby Lillihammer) receives automatic notification.

Description: SCP-4889-JP is an anomalous television program produced by Vikander-Kneed Technical Media (GoI-5889) and titled Good Night & Good VKTM, which forcibly interrupts television broadcasts within the United States of America. SCP-4889-JP is broadcast by replacing any program on all televisions within a single county or smaller administrative district at a time. Viewers and original production staff do not perceive this replacement as anything unusual.

SCP-4889-JP repeatedly broadcasts content aligned with a consistent theme every night for a period ranging from two weeks to approximately two months, followed by an irregular hiatus (lasting from as short as one day to as long as two and a half months), after which it resumes with a different theme. Despite self-identifying as a news program, SCP-4889-JP rarely addresses topical current events during its broadcasts.

During the first half of its cycle (hereafter referred to as the "first-half segment"), SCP-4889-JP affirms and encourages specific ideologies, hobbies, and behaviors (designated as SCP-4889-JP-A). This encouragement has been confirmed to lack any anomalous coercive properties such as memetic effects or cognitohazards. Concepts not recognized in normal society occasionally serve as SCP-4889-JP-A; in such cases, viewers come to understand the basic background context through unknown means and accept these concepts without experiencing cognitive dissonance, even when the information clearly contradicts the established consensus reality.

Individuals who have watched the first-half segment at least once experience dreams that night and thereafter in which they achieve either personal happiness or social success through SCP-4889-JP-A. This motivates many viewers to engage in activities related to SCP-4889-JP-A, despite the fact that SCP-4889-JP is significantly less appealing than similar programs. A slight increase in Akiva radiation can be observed in these individuals while they are asleep.

At the beginning of a particular episode occurring several days to slightly over a week after the program's broadcast began, SCP-4889-JP announces a complete change in the cast (hereinafter referred to as the "latter-half segment"). In the latter-half segment, the new hosts denounce SCP-4889-JP-A and the former cast members who had advocated for it, claiming that SCP-4889-JP-A is communistic, unpatriotic, and anti-liberal. These claims range widely, from seemingly logically sound arguments to outright incoherent assertions.

Broadcasts of the latter-half segment effectively place individuals engaged in SCP-4889-JP-A-related activities (hereinafter referred to as "subjects") in a unfavorable position within their local communities. Due to the fact that many subjects actively express their involvement in SCP-4889-JP-A-related activities — particularly to other SCP-4889-JP viewers — and claim achievements during the first-half segment, they face significant condemnation and persecution within their communities. While this hostility is deemed a normal reaction and not an anomalous effect of SCP-4889-JP, opinions are divided as to whether the local police's indifference to such acts constitutes an anomaly.

Although the subjects initially attempt to prove their innocence, the success rate of such efforts is extremely low. As a result, the subjects are forced into isolation from the outside society, relocation, suicide, or enduring continuous persecution by local residents. Since the subjects continue to experience the same positive dreams even during the broadcast of the latter-half segment, there are occasional cases where they abandon social activities and focus solely on sleeping, often using sleeping pills. 37% of the subjects have moved away from the area within one year after the broadcast began. Additionally, approximately 20% of the subjects have been assaulted due to this phenomenon, with 7% of those cases resulting in murder and 5% in suicide.1

When a subject dies in the aforementioned circumstances, they emit a strong, directional Akiva radiation that is directed toward either an abandoned structure or a vacant house within the area. Subsequent investigations indicate that, at the time of the subject's death, an advanced machine capable of absorbing and storing Akiva radiation2 was present at this location, and it had been relocated before the Foundation could pinpoint the site. Items left behind at such locations3 indicate that GoI-5889 was active there.

Following the conclusion of the latter-half segment, the subjects cease to experience anomalous dreams, and their Akiva radiation levels during sleep no longer increase, though their other behaviors remain unchanged. Even if the subject dies after the broadcast cycle has ended, their death still triggers the emission of powerful Akiva radiation as described above, so long as it is directly or indirectly related to SCP-4889-JP.

The ideologies, hobbies, and behaviors presented as SCP-4889-JP-A include;

  • Watching Hollywood movies
  • Neoplatonism
  • Daeva-Masochism4
  • Clowns
  • Fifthism
  • Boycotting products from companies whose initials are S-C-P
  • Support for the Democratic Party
  • Support for the Republican Party
  • Ice hockey
  • Punching sharks
  • Practicing black magic
  • Boycotting Argentine beef
  • Active use of demonics
  • Rejection of demonics theory

The following are excerpted from SCP-4889-JP-21-2 (the second broadcast of Cycle 21), which aired on September 8, 1951, in █████████ County, Michigan. SCP-4889-JP-A-21 was American films.

Saim Mayners: Good evening, and welcome back to Good VKTM. Just like yesterday, this program is brought to you by me, Saim, and Peoples. But let's be honest, all of you watching programs like this are probably more preoccupied with the Treaty of San Francisco than with anything on television. This officially spells the end of the Pacific War, where people kept shouting "Tengu no hana wo ore!"5 Have you ever been to Asia, Peoples?

[A voice similar to the roar of a wild beast. The source is not visible on screen.]

Mayners: Well then, please give our regards to the yellow race! Because our missiles are already aimed at the blasted Soviet Union.

[Mayners drinks a clear liquid from a bottle.]

Mayners: Come on, Peoples! Don't make such a sour face. This is a liberal democratic country! I think you should try smiling more, don't you agree? You see, the present is the past when viewed from the future. Unlike in some censored countries, we can always review today! Not just remember it, but actually review it. What I'm getting at is, that's right! Movies. We should spend more of our lives watching movies. Head on over to Hollywood! You good-for-nothing.

[The sound of extremely rapid breathing is heard from right next to the camera.]

Mayners: I understand your concerns. Trumbo's breath was always red, and scum like Harold Palmer still run rampant in Hollywood. Even so! Even so, friends. Keep clapping and laughing. If you'd rather have your mental eardrums burst by the megaphones of ideologies that drive us toward revolution and collectivism, then just go with the wind, you dunderheads.

Mayners: Besides, Technicolor technology has been advancing lately. Just like those fools who can't see real history because of their obsession with Marxist theory, let's dunk the anti-progressives who denounce new colors as gross right into a dye vat. Remember, we're aiming not for the Good Ol' Yesterday(heh), but for a Better TomorrowTM!6

[Five seconds of screaming, followed by twenty-six seconds of mastication sounds.]

Mayners: That's a wonderful idea. Now, just be careful about the rights, and please continue watching All Quiet on the Western Front on this channel.

A scene from All Quiet on the Western Front as shown on the program.

[The full-length version of the film All Quiet on the Western Front, directed by Lewis Milestone, is broadcast7. All characters' faces are obscured by the VKTM logo. Despite the broadcast lasting only about ten minutes, viewers perceive it as having watched the entire film, which runs just over two hours, at normal speed. No temporal anomalies have been detected.]

Mayners: Now, what a magnificent film that was! It really drove home the conviction that we must engage in battle against the communists8. Well then, everyone, see you again tomorrow. Good night, and good VKTM.

Winston Iceball.

Meyer Jones, who had been serving as the host until the day before.

Winston Iceball: Good evening, and welcome to the night of the fifth month fifth — the birthday of the great aristocrat and capitalist Marx, and a day of remembrance for all communists from the hideous Marxists to the unclean Fifth International. Yes, this is indeed Good VKTM, but I have some unfortunate news for our viewers. Meyer, who had been your host until yesterday, along with twenty-four other crew, has been dismissed. Effective today, I, Winston Iceball, will be filling in as host.

Julia Bonaparte: What, McLean too? I was supposed to have an off-site conference with him today.

Iceball: Don't ever have anything to do with that sort of thing again. [Turning back] It has come to light today that the Fifth Starfish was writhing among those twenty-five fingers9. On behalf of Vikander-Kneed… What? VKTM won't take responsibility? I mean, on behalf of Good Night & Good VKTM, I apologize for broadcasting fermented maggots over our proud nation's public airwaves.

Bonaparte: You keep saying fifth this and fifth that, but what's so wrong with it anyway? The First Amendment guarantees freedom of religion, remember? Near New Mexico, people even pray to mosquitoes and gears. Why should some numerology be any different?

Iceball: Freedom? No no, no no no no no no no no, we're in the middle of a war right now. Two army corps from the Soviet, one from Korea, one from the Chinese continent, and then the Fifth Column! The signal has already spread from California all the way to Rasalhague10. If the filthy entertainment industry they've spawned gets jammed into the gears of Ford's factories producing with not five in fifty thousand errors, our home front will collapse, and eventually the Red Starfish will smile down from the night sky! This studio is the last sterile chamber in the States that's eliminated the Fifth Wave. We alone can save the people from that red star. So keep an eye out to see if your neighbor sends checks! Instead of making wishes upon the stars, build missiles that can reach the Moon! Hold fast to the ever-repeated slogan in your hearts forever: No commy Fifthists or nothin'11.

[Iceball takes a deep breath. About six seconds later, Bonaparte suddenly bursts into tears.]

Iceball: Security, Containment, Protection. Please don't forget this phrase. All right, people, good night, and good VKTM.

Addendum 2: The Final Broadcast

SCP-4889-JP ceased broadcasting on March 10, 1954. The following is excerpted from the final episode (SCP-4889-JP-47-10). SCP-4889-JP-A-47 was the Red Scare. Notably, the latter-half segment of Cycle SCP-4889-JP-47 was broadcast only on this single day.

[BEGIN LOG]

[A humanoid entity with an extremely enlarged right eye and left arm stands clad in clothing reminiscent of a Soviet military uniform. Notably, the Vikander-Kneed Technical Media logo is sewn onto his cap instead of the red five-pointed star symbolizing communism.]

Humanoid entity: Salute to our comrade McCarthy who has exposed the contradictions of capitalist nations! Proletarians of ██████ County, ████████████ County, ████████ Town, ████████████ City, ████████ County… [A total of forty-seven administrative districts that were previously the subject of the SCP-4889-JP broadcasts are listed.] …who have taken another step toward the communist revolution in America, let us carve out our own lives with our own hands, overthrow this nation's false regime, and build the Soviet Republic for the United Workers!

Humanoid entity: And also, our comrade Vikander-Kneed Technical Media™ is prepared to support your Better Tomorrow™, based on their fee schedule, for any activities that support the workers or the bourgeoisie!

[The entity sprays a viscous, transparent liquid from the top of his head.]

Cheerful male voice: In a communist state, the state fucks you!

In a capitalist state? The state fucks you, too!

Calm androgynous voice: It is with great regret that, effective today, this program Good Night & Good VKTM will cease broadcasting. To all our viewers, we sincerely thank you for your long-standing support.

[The scene fades out as the entity smears the liquid spilled on the ground all over himself.]

Calm androgynous voice: Good night, and

Extremely numerous voices12: [Interrupting] Go to hell.

Calm androgynous voice: Good VKTM.

[END LOG]

Following the conclusion of this broadcast, every known individual who had previously viewed SCP-4889-JP13 entered a one-hour coma. Resulting confirmed casualties amounted to 5,612 injured and 291 dead.

All affected individuals uniformly reported having dreamed of wandering through an endless wilderness while being crucified and set ablaze. Furthermore, those previously known to have committed acts of violence inspired by the latter segment of SCP-4889-JP have been found to emit Akiva radiation carrying highly negative charges, regardless of their prior behavioral tendencies. The Department of Tactical Theology has analyzed that, regardless of their future actions, these individuals have a probability of over 99.96% of proceeding to Hell or an equivalent afterlife upon death.
