SCP-1283-JP

Item #: SCP-1283-JP

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: Standard steel fences and gates are to installed around the perimeter of SCP-1283-JP, as well as along the Alpha and Beta Access Routes described below, to prevent access by unauthorized parties. This area is to be officially designated as private property, and corresponding warning signs are to be placed at regular intervals along the fence. Security cameras are to be installed on the fence and at key locations within the perimeter to enable prompt response by security personnel to any unauthorized entry. It must be noted that the railway track passing through the containment area and SCP-1283-JP is an active line; constant alertness is required regarding potential contact via this track.

The SCP-1283-JP activation process triggered by an intruder can be forcibly terminated by nearby staff entering the area. If an intruder triggers activation, the subsequent sequence up to deactivation is to be recorded using fixed-point monitoring devices, followed by a thorough interrogation of the intruder. After the interrogation, the intruder is to be implanted with a false memory that they failed to enter the area or trigger activation, before being released as in standard unauthorized entry cases.

Description: SCP-1283-JP is a Class-1 level railroad crossing, located on the outskirts of Hachiōji, Tokyo, Japan. Its appearance and functionality are indistinguishable from those of typical railroad crossings, and no notable anomalous properties have been observed aside from those described below. It is located at the intersection of a small path gradually ascending through the hill of ██████ and the ████████ ████ Line railroad track crossing it orthogonally.

SCP-1283-JP enters its activation process when all four of the following criteria are met.

  1. The intruder into this area has experienced the death of a close individual.
  2. The intruder enters the area from the Alpha Access Route.1
  3. No individuals other than the intruder are present within a 200-meter radius of SCP-1283-JP.
  4. Starting at exactly 2:00 AM Japan Standard Time, the intruder closes their eyes for at least 20 seconds in front of SCP-1283-JP and strongly visualizes a reunion with the deceased person specified in Criterion #1.2

When SCP-1283-JP enters the activation process, the subject perceives the sound of the crossing gates lowering, followed by the sound of an approaching train.3 If the subject opens their eyes during the process, or if the surrounding monitoring systems (excluding audio recording devices) remain operational, this approaching sound simply fades away as SCP-1283-JP deactivates. Once this occurs, the anomaly cannot reactivate on the same day.

If the subject keeps their eyes closed and the monitoring systems are shut down within a certain timeframe after the process begins, the approaching sound is perceived as having passed directly in front of the subject. This acoustics can also be captured by audio recording devices. From this point and for approximately 20 seconds until the passing sound becomes distant, the subject becomes unable to open their eyes, and the shut-down monitoring systems cannot be restarted either. The anomaly is considered to be fully activated at this phase.

Once the state of rigidity is lifted, the subject observes the deceased person they wished to reunite with (designated as SCP-1283-JP-A) directly in front of them, separated by the lowered railroad crossing gates. This entity can also be captured by reactivated monitoring systems, and its physical appearance is generally consistent with that of the corresponding person during a period when their physical and mental state was stable. However, upon the lifting of the rigidity, audio recording devices begin to capture only continuous noise of unknown origin until the anomaly is deactivated.

The subject claims that SCP-1283-JP-A is aware that it is deceased and is capable of engaging in clear communication with them. While SCP-1283-JP-A is present, entry by other individuals into a 100-meter radius around SCP-1283-JP is rendered impossible by an unknown effect; attempts by the subject to remotely contact SCP-1283-JP-A, assault it, or engage in direct interaction by crossing the lowered crossing gates are similarly impeded.

Approximately 20 minutes after the appearance of SCP-1283-JP-A, a humanoid entity designated as SCP-1283-JP-B emerges from further within the Beta Access Route. SCP-1283-JP-B appears to be a toddler around 4 years old wearing white clothing; its gender and ethnicity are currently undetermined. SCP-1283-JP-B typically approaches SCP-1283-JP-A with a smile and begins pulling the hem of its clothing or the tips of its fingers toward the direction from which SCP-1283-JP-B emerged. While SCP-1283-JP-A seems capable of ignoring or resisting this behavior to some extent, in such cases SCP-1283-JP-B gradually displays a look of frustration, and its pulling motions begin to become more rough and forceful. In all observed cases to date, within a few minutes of SCP-1283-JP-B's arrival, SCP-1283-JP-A has reluctantly complied with its demands and terminated communication with the subject.

Once communication ends, SCP-1283-JP-A often displays a friendly demeanor toward SCP-1283-JP-B and begins walking along the Beta Access Route while holding hands, smiling, or engaging in light-hearted conversation. Once both entities have proceeded along the curved path and are no longer visible due to the surrounding trees, the lowered crossing gates open again. At this point, the unknown effect preventing others from entering the area and proceeding along the Beta Access Route is lifted, and the anomaly is considered deactivated.

SCP-1283-JP was used by local residents for approximately ██ years from its installation in 19██ until the Foundation contained it in 20██, though it has not been determined when its anomalous properties first manifested. SCP-1283-JP was treated as an urban legend of unknown origin by several local residents and online communities until the Foundation became aware of these accounts and the existence of individuals who had actually experienced activation events. This led to its containment after investigations confirmed that its properties matched those described in the rumors.

SCP-1283-JP Activation Log: The following lists details regarding SCP-1283-JP activation events known to the Foundation.

Log 1283-JP-1 - 20██/██/██

Subject: Male in his 10s
SCP-1283-JP-A: The subject's former romantic partner

Summary: The subject claimed that SCP-1283-JP-A was his romantic partner who had died in an accident several months prior. He also described SCP-1283-JP-B as an "angel" and expressed positive thoughts and gratitude toward the phenomenon, stating that he was able to have one last conversation and share a final farewell that never happened in reality before his partner was "called back by the angel."

Note #1: This is the first confirmed testimony regarding an SCP-1283-JP activation event preceding containment. The subject stated that he had heard the relevant rumor from an acquaintance at his school and performed the activation ritual while remaining skeptical. An interview was conducted with this acquaintance, who claimed the information came from another acquaintance. The genuine origin of the rumor remains unknown.

Note #2: Following the interview, a replication experiment involving the subject was conducted, during which SCP-1283-JP did not activate. Subsequent verifications confirmed that deceased individuals once manifested as SCP-1283-JP-A cannot be summoned thereafter.

Experiment Log 1283-JP-3 - 20██/██/██

Subject: Male in his 20s
1283-JP-A: Male child around 10 years old

Summary: The subject claimed that SCP-1283-JP-A was his younger brother who had died of illness; the child's appearance matched that of pre-prepared reference materials. When the subject was instructed to interact with SCP-1283-JP-A, communication was established without issue. After SCP-1283-JP-B appeared, SCP-1283-JP-A said goodbye to the subject. Both entities disappeared at the 24 minutes and 32 second mark.

Note: Subsequent log entries describe the content of the communication based on the subject's testimony provided after the experiment concluded.

Experiment Log 1283-JP-4 - 20██/██/██

Subject: Female in her 30s
1283-JP-A: Male, estimated to be in his 60s

Summary: The subject claimed that SCP-1283-JP-A was her biological father who had died several years ago. As instructed by the assigned research team, the subject attempted various forms of questioning with SCP-1283-JP-A, though no meaningful information regarding its origin was obtained. SCP-1283-JP-A described SCP-1283-JP-B as "the pick-up kid," and displayed an abstract yet favorable attitude toward it.

The personal details and memories regarding the subject mentioned by SCP-1283-JP-A were confirmed to be entirely accurate. SCP-1283-JP-A frequently asked about the subject's current situation and health, and repeatedly expressed wishes for her well-being. Both entities disappeared at the 23 minute, 50 second mark.

Experiment Log 1283-JP-7 - 20██/██/██

Subject: Female in her 90s
1283-JP-A: Young male, estimated to be in his 20s, wearing a kokumin-fuku.4

Summary: The subject claimed that SCP-1283-JP-A was her spouse who had been killed during the war. It was reconfirmed that communication between the subject and SCP-1283-JP-A is possible without any dissonance caused by the chronological gap, and that SCP-1283-JP-A possesses no knowledge of events that occurred after its own death.

As in previous examples, this SCP-1283-JP-A instance also expressed an abstract yet strong affection toward SCP-1283-JP-B. SCP-1283-JP-A apologized to the subject for dying young, expressed his love, and said goodbye. Both entities disappeared at the 21 minute, 58 second mark.

Experiment Log 1283-JP-10 - 20██/██/██

Subject: Male in his 40s, Foundation employee
1283-JP-A: Male in his 60s

Summary: The subject claimed that SCP-1283-JP-A was ██████ ██████, the former Research Director of SCP-████-JP who was killed during its Rampage Incident on 20██/██/██; research team members who reviewed the monitoring footage agreed with this statement.

The aforementioned SCP-████-JP Rampage Incident resulted in the loss of information essential to its study due to Director ██████'s death. During the course of communication, SCP-1283-JP-A successfully provided the lost information, which was later proven to be accurate. Both entities disappeared at the 19 minute, 18 second mark.

Experiment Log 1283-JP-11 - 20██/██/██ (Incident-1283-JP-01)

Subject: Female in her 30s, Foundation employee
1283-JP-A: Male in his 30s

Summary: The subject volunteered for this experiment and claimed that SCP-1283-JP-A was her fiancé who had died in an accident. Various follow-up studies were conducted to resolve the questions that had arisen up to that point.

However, SCP-1283-JP-B appeared much earlier than the previous average arrival time, and was followed by an additional, visually identical SCP-1283-JP-B instance. Both SCP-1283-JP-B instances began pulling SCP-1283-JP-A’s clothing toward the Beta Access Route. This resulted in SCP-1283-JP-A ceasing communication at 12 minutes and 20 seconds, significantly earlier than in previous events.

SCP-1283-JP-A took the hands of the SCP-1283-JP-B instances and walked toward the Beta Access Route, flanked on both sides by them. All entities disappeared at the 13 minute, 08 second mark.

Log 1283-JP-112

Incident-1283-JP-02-A: To prepare for and rehearse the experiment scheduled for 20██/██/██, the research team began work in the containment area at 11:00 PM the previous day. At 12:14 AM, approximately one hour into preparations, eight SCP-1283-JP-B instances appeared from the Beta Access Route5, despite none of the activation criteria being met and SCP-1283-JP-A not having manifested. All SCP-1283-JP-A instances were visually identical.

In response to this development, the research team urgently attempted to communicate with SCP-1283-JP-B instances and interviewed them regarding their background and origin. All SCP-1283-JP-B instances merely smiled silently at the interviewer and the research team members present, and no information could be obtained. SCP-1283-JP-B instances remained in place until 2:00 AM, at which point the experiment was approved to proceed under those circumstances.

Subject: Female in her 40s
1283-JP-A: Male in his 20s
Summary: N/A

Incident-1283-JP-02-B: The activation process showed no deviations from previous cases and proceeded as usual. When the subject opened her eyes and the video monitoring systems resumed operation, SCP-1283-JP-B instances were observed gathering around SCP-1283-JP-A and pulling vigorously on various parts of its body. SCP-1283-JP-A lost its balance and fell within seconds, whereupon SCP-1283-JP-B instances began grabbing its clothing, limbs, and hair to forcibly drag it toward the Beta Access Route. Despite the situation, both SCP-1283-JP-A and SCP-1283-JP-B instances maintained broad smiles throughout, and SCP-1283-JP-A continued to exhibit gestures as if engaged in light conversation. All entities disappeared at the 02 minute, 40 second mark.

Note: Experiments following Incident-1283-JP-02 are currently suspended. Since this incident, whenever any research team member involved in previous experiments enters the SCP-1283-JP containment area, SCP-1283-JP-B instances invariably appear from the Beta Access Route within several dozen minutes, regardless of whether an experiment is in progress or the specific hour. Communication with SCP-1283-JP-B instances has still not been established, and their observed behavior is consistently limited to a broad smile directed at approaching personnel. Once personnel exit the containment area, SCP-1283-JP-B instances spontaneously depart and disappear within a few minutes. The number of instances appearing is gradually increasing, with up to fifteen instances now arriving simultaneously.

Addendum 1: Tracing the spread of the urban legend that led to the containment of SCP-1283-JP, it was discovered that rumors prior to a certain point in the past included the additional detail indicating that, after the interaction concluded, the deceased person would depart by train. Although it is unclear when or how this specific detail was lost, the research team has assessed that multiple unconfirmed activation events were involved and is continuing their investigation. Based on this additional information, it has been theorized that the nature of SCP-1283-JP may have mutated due to unknown factors in the past, or that SCP-1283-JP and SCP-1283-JP-B may have fundamentally different origins. At present, these theories have not been corroborated.

Addendum 2: On 20██/██/██, the audio analysis team confirmed that the noise recorded from the moment SCP-1283-JP-A manifested until it disappeared shared a common, identical pattern. Upon analyzing the collected audio recordings, it was found that all of them were severely distorted in the same manner; based on the identified pattern, the original acoustic structure was successfully inferred and reconstructed from the individual noise samples previously recorded.

As far as can be determined at this time, each reconstructed audio data consists of unknown sounds reminiscent of ████████████, accompanied by continuous screams consistent with those of the deceased person present during the corresponding experiment.
