SCP-056-J resting between sets
Item #: SCP-056-J
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-056-J is housed in a 30 cm acrylic cube terrarium within the Sector-4 Entomology Wing. The enclosure must contain fresh damp soil, oak leaves, and three unblemished acorns renewed twice weekly.
To maintain acoustic fidelity without disrupting adjacent research sectors, the terrarium is lined with studio-grade acoustic dampening foam. High-fidelity omnidirectional microphones are positioned within the terrarium to record all acoustic emissions.
Description: SCP-056-J is an adult female acorn weevil (Curculio glandium) measuring approximately 7 mm in length. Anatomically, SCP-056-J is identical to non-anomalous members of its species, with the exception of specialised internal tracheae and spiracles along its rostrum.
By manipulating airflow across internal cartilaginous reeds and manipulating its antennae along the dorsal surface of the rostrum like octave keys, SCP-056-J produces acoustic output identical in timbre, range, and resonance to an Henri Selmer Paris Mark VI tenor saxophone.
Despite a cranial volume of roughly 0.6 mm³, SCP-056-J displays virtuoso-level fluency in modal jazz, blues improvisation, and bebop chord progressions. It frequently performs unaccompanied, highly technical renditions of standards by John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, and Duke Ellington, alongside spontaneous polyphonic compositions.
The primary anomalous effect occurs when human subjects hear SCP-056-J play live.
Listeners immediately experience:
- Severe, uncontrollable lacrimation (crying).
- Existential catharsis and aesthetic grief.
- Compulsive murmurs of approval (e.g. "Yeah, man," "Take your time with it," "She's in the pocket").
This response is purely psychological; tests show no neurochemical toxins or physical compulsion. Subjects describe the tone as "impossibly smoky," "achingly soulful," and "far too heavy for a bug that weighs two milligrams."
| Stimulus | SCP-056-J Reaction | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Audio recording of a standard jazz rhythm section (bass and drums). | SCP-056-J taps its tarsi in time, playing a flawless counter-melody to the recorded bassline. | Aesthetically pleasing; researchers report mild to moderate weeping. |
| Introduction of a live male Curculio glandium (acorn weevil) for mating purposes. | SCP-056-J ignores the male, playing a somber, dissonant solo in D minor until the male is removed. | Male weevil observed attempting to bury itself in the soil. |
| Audio recording of modern electronic dance music (EDM). | SCP-056-J stops playing, turns its back to the speaker, and emits a single, sharp 110 dB honk. | Testing suspended. |
Audio Log SCP-056-J-04
Lead Researcher: Dr. Fritz Humboldt
Subject: D-6973 (former professional audio engineer)
Environment: Soundproof testing suite. Terrarium placed on central table.(SCP-056-J climbs atop an acorn, taps its front tarsi rhythmically four times against the shell, and raises its rostrum.)
SCP-056-J executes a descending pentatonic run in E-flat minor, transitioning into a slow, sustained ballad. The acoustic volume peaks at 84 dB.
(D-6973 drops his clipboard. Tear tracks are visible on both cheeks.)
(SCP-056-J leans back on its hind legs, executing a complex sequence of microtonal bends and multi-phonics.)
D-6973: (sobbing) It's like…she's seen the harvest fail. She's seen the winter come and take everyone she ever crawled with, doc. She knows the weight of the dirt.
Dr. Humboldt: Please maintain emotional detachment, D-6973. It is literally an insect.
SCP-056-J shifts abruptly into double-time swing, navigating a complex progression through the bridge.
(Dr. Humboldt remains silent for twelve seconds.)
Dr. Humboldt: (voice cracking) God damn. The phrasing. The phrasing is immaculate.
Addendum #1
On 12/03/2026, SCP-056-J escaped through an unlatched terrarium seam and entered the Sector-4 HVAC ductwork.
The anomaly stationed itself at a central duct junction and began an extended, reverb-heavy ballad in B-flat minor. The metallic ventilation system amplified the performance throughout the entire wing.
Containment efforts degraded immediately:
14:14 - Lambda-12 "Pest Control" arrives in full tactical gear, locates the source grille, and stops advancing.
14:16 - SCP-056-J transitions into a slow, melancholic crescendo that echoes out of a ceiling grille.
14:16 - Squad Captain Miller lowers his rifle, sits heavily against the reinforced hallway bulkhead, and rests his forehead in his hands.
14:18 - Operative Davies places containment equipment onto the floor, slides down the opposite wall, and begins silently weeping while staring at a scuff mark on his combat boots. When asked over comms if the anomaly is contained, Davies responds: "She’s talking about everything I left behind in Chicago, Command. Every single thing."
14:25 - Twenty-four research personnel, seven maintenance technicians, and all five members of Lambda-12 are seated flat on the linoleum corridor floor in complete silence, occasionally passing a roll of low-lint cleanroom wipes between them.
14:57 - SCP-056-J concludes the set with a quiet, unresolved ninth chord and crawls out through an exhaust vent directly into an open specimen container held by Dr. Humboldt, who was too emotionally hollowed out to close the lid for an additional three minutes.
Containment was re-established without physical injury. Sector-4 was non-operational for the remainder of the shift due to acute collective nostalgia and an unscheduled team-wide review of early-career life regrets.
