Hey there, Parawatch!
To celebrate the second year of our forum's existence, I wanted to discuss something I have been thinking about for a good few months now. It's a weird and unlikely story, so bear with me.
For the past couple weeks, I've been hooked on… something. I would rather not name it, but it starts with M. Not really worth it. Sure, i survived university with it. Borderline photographic memory while on it. But it's not worth it. I am getting these weird headaches and also memories? I am not sure anymore, but i am getting these images of a visit to my mother. And the more i tried to make sense of it, the more fucked up it gets.
I could take some more and write what comes to mind. I've never heard of any substance that causes false memories like this so consistently.

Honestly, kinda wish I was on that. Would make Uni more bearable.
Anything weird with the visit? And how vivid are the memories?

Very, very vidid. I have just taken another pill and remember it all as if it just happened.
That visit would've happened during late October, when I first started experimenting with this substance. The town my mother lives in is a small appalachian settlement, the kind where most stores are now closed and a large portion of the houses abandoned. I think it went to shit when i was a kid. Not that sure anymore because… you know. The drugs.
Most busy street in town.
I asked her about it and, at first, she seemed almost surprised when I told here there was a whole family home next to where she lived. Even weirder, the moment I had her look at it, she not only acknowledged it, but also claimed that it had stood there abandoned ever since she moved in all those decades ago.
But here's the thing - Neither of these houses looked like they were abandoned for 20 years. Not a sign of water damage or rot to be found. Only an overgrown frontyard.

I decided to do a little bit of research myself that day and asked the few people around the town what they know. And their responses? Same as my mother. I asked four different people, and two of them were shocked when I pointed out the town was emptying out.
It is at this point that, like any sane watcher, I decided to break into one of the houses. After having told my mother goodbye, I pretended to drive away only to stop in another part of town and come back, armed with nothing but a flashlight. Again, very smart of me, I know.
When I entered through an open back door, I noticed this…stench. The house looked almost normal, just cacked in dust, but it smelled like rotten food and…I guess roadkill? This is where my memory gets more fuzzy, as I just remember stumbling around. At one point, I tripped over something in the kitchen, but I can't remember what it was. Maybe I fainted? I know the smell was the worst there.
At some point after that, I found my way into the living room, where I found a VHS tape on the couch. It had "Jacksons' written on the back in scratchy letters, nothing more. I put it into the player in that room, since the lights were still on, and then…I don't know. For the life of me, I can't remember its contents, but I know there was something on it. Why can't I remember it?

Everything alright, Kathie? It seemed like you were going to do a follow up. Just slightly worried.

Thanks, Alvin. It's alright, I just had a headache there and needed a moment. I think I remember now.
I've taken more of those pills, probably much more than reasonable. I've noticed that I remember more of it, the more I take. I am also getting these hallucinations, or at least I hope they are that. Bugs crawling on my arms and desk only to dissapear when I swathe them off. I can almost feel them crawling at times.
Whatever. I think the tape was recorded from a handheld camera, but it looked very professional. It started with a view of this…children's bedroom, I think? You could hear faint singing at start. It showed kids toys scattered around and a colorful carpet. It was stained with some dark liquid, almost half of it. The lighting wasn't enough to see much else.
Then, the camera began to move forwards, out of the room and across the house. Same house I was in. It moved into the kitchen, where this 30-something lady was making scrambled eggs. She didn't pay attention to the camera, even as it moved right up to her face. A minute or two of just that, the camera being uncomfortably close to her, before she was struck with something. The camera shook, there was a cut, and there she was lying dead in the next shot. There was a pool of blood around her. Five different stab wounds in her back, all pouring. That wasn't the end of the tape, though.

Right after, a tall, beareded man entered. I thought he was maybe her husband, but he didn't react. Not in the slightest. He just stepped forward, on top of her body, and grabbed a pan off the stove before sitting at a dinner table next to her. He just ate, while the camera moved behind him, even zooming in on his food. I can almost swear I heard kind of faint sounds and words, as if whoever was holding the camera tried to sing him a lullaby.
Then, just as he finished eating, the camera swung forwards. There was another cut right there, with the next scene showing him slumped over, his face in the plate and his skull caved in. Same number of holes in his back, too. The floor was drenched in blood.
I don't know what to think of this. These are too specific, too vivid to be false memories. They are fleeting fast, though. I've only got a couple of pills now, and I already feel them growing weaker as I type.
There is one more thing I remember from that night. While I was on my way out of the town, I stopped by one of the abandoned houses, on the complete opposite side from where I lived. I am not sure what I was looking for there, but I leaned in through the window.
There was a VHS tape laying on the ground.
