Stories and Editorials

Greetings everyone!

I have rolled the bones, whispered to the winds, and divined a vision of the upcoming contest we are all anticipating with bated breath; that's right, 9kcon!

I talked to NaepicNaepic, Lead of Contests Team and he has given me a hint for the theme of the contest.

According to our dear friend, the first letter of the theme of the contest is "S".

What could this mean?

Stay tuned for the contest to find out!

- By Uncle Nicolini

This year, the ZH-TR branch hosted a Groups of Interest Con! Here we have Dr V ValentineDr V Valentine to give us some inside look into the contest:

1.) Groups of Interest have been a staple of SCP since its inception. What got you to consider having a contest for it this year?

We have never held a GoI contest before. Most people join our site because they want to write SCPs, and as such I feel like GoI was ignored despite it being an interesting topic. This contest aims to encourage authors to write more about GoIs.

2.) How do you and other authors manage and plan this event?

The theme of the year is to complement elements we lack in the site, and GoI stood out of all topics. I've decided to set it as our contest theme after getting agreement from other organisers

3.) What are your top 3 favorite GoI’s?

WWS, Oneiroi, GOC

4.) What do you think makes a GoI stand out?

A unique theme! In the past, most GoIs are Foundation-adjacent, but recently there have been more and more exciting groups that are more down to earth, closer to our daily lives, while retaining their mysteries and areas of imagination. I believe these are important for creating a GoI.

5.) Do you have any final thoughts you would like to share with readers?

I encourage SCP article authors to write more about GoIs to have a change of scenery, perhaps you'll find a topic you love. GoIs have a lot of untapped potential.

I was also surprised by the number of authors who tried to achieve an award [* for creating a GoI from scratch and reaching minimum requirements for applying for a tag]. The reward isn't much [*NTD$50 for each] but many are eager to try.

Classic Con Retrospective

Classic Con has come to an end and what a marvelous contest it was. With 155 surviving entries, Classic Con has been the biggest contest we've had in the sites recent history, managing to even surpass the number of entries for 8Kon!

We'd like to give a massive round of applause to local lesbian commielocal lesbian commie for wining the con with SCP-8557 - Again Narcissus? with a massive +326 rating by the end of the con. We'd also like to give an applause to the runners up as seen bellow:
Place Entry Author Rating Achievements
#2 SCP-8411 - Paper Birch Trail Dino--DrawsDino--Draws 296 TOTAL WINNER
#3 SCP-8304 - Modern Comfort PlaguePJPPlaguePJP 222
#4 SCP-8975 - Domestic Abyss HarryBlankHarryBlank 209 TOTAL WINNER
#5 SCP-8513 - Without Parole Doctor CimmerianDoctor Cimmerian 206 PERFECTION, AMNESIAC, ORIGINAL (218 words)

And finally we'd like to give a word of appreciation the the sites contest team for smashing cons they've put together this year

And to celebrate the massive success of local lesbian commielocal lesbian commie, we wanted to get her thoughts on her fantastic piece and the contest as a whole! We greatly appreciate Gaby taking out her time to answer our questions.

1) What was your inspiration for your piece, what made you pick this avenue of horror?

All my works come from a principle of disagreement I have with Cesar A. Cruz; he said art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable. In my opinion, art should disturb both. To begin with, why am I making art if not to provoke desperation? A sense of urgency? As a mirror of reality, art is to be equally aggressive and broken. That’s been evident in my style since SCP-8474.

Since I have studied Oscar Wilde's work and his thoughts on aestheticism during the fin-de-siècle England, I have realized that, as a writer, what I create doesn't need to end with a beautiful, reinvigorating ending that teaches a moral lesson to the reader in the form a solution. My call for action, so to speak, is meant to be born from disgust. We live in troubled times, and horror has always been the first genre to call out on the blood that stains humanity’s history.

About SCP-8557's case specifically, I took a lot of inspiration from manga writer Junji Ito. Right after the contest was announced, I wondered what could be a good way to depict the uncanny, and his artwork and storylines came to mind soon enough — especially Glyceride's. Then, once I had the initial idea, I began shapening it according to my personal experiences — as someone who has to deal with mental health issues — and Japanese folklore horror, mainly, which would give life to the characters of Akari Tanaka and Himari Akiyama later on.

2) Now that you have the power of hindsight, is there anything you would've done differently for this contest?

Not really. A few readers here and there mentioned that the image could be more realistic, but they didn't see it as a dealbreaker. Other than that, all the changes I deemed necessary were minor and made at the beginning of the contest. Overall, I'm just proud of what I created.

3) What were you overall thoughts on Classic Con as a whole?

This is contest is everything I could ask for as a writer. So many new authors joined our community — such as Animal HospitalAnimal Hospital and softsealsoftseal — that I can't help but thank the contest team for this. Furthermore, as a Series I enjoyer, it was a delight to see modern-like entries through the lenses of typical 2010 internet horror. SCP-7256 by Animal HospitalAnimal Hospital is a great example of that.

4) Do you have any favourite entries that you think can use some more love from the readers at home?

Of course. We're talking about the biggest contest our site has ever hosted, after all. Outside of the top 50, SCP-7581 by xexnoncoresxexnoncores and SCP-8742 by FishishFishish really stood out due to their very personal depiction of human life's fragility. SCP-8719 by TserceleTsercele, on the other hand, is evocative because of the lack of details it has and the implications it leaves us with. But my favorite one would be SCP-8640 by FrankEntropyFrankEntropy, for sure — with a subversion that hits you like a brick. Just read it yourselves and you will see what I mean.

5) Do you have any thoughts on how the massive success of the con will effect the wiki going forwards?

Not only I hope it motivates more authors to write shortform horror, but shows to the off-site SCP community there's still room for the classic style and the "weird thing that does a thing" trope. It's not uncommon to see the claim that all articles these days are just tales, and although that's always been wrong, it is now more incorrect than ever.

6) Any closing thoughts you'd like to share?

This wouldn't have been possible without the help of my wonderful friends, so I would like to thank their support once more — with special thanks to GuaireGuaire, HaydenSaintPascalHaydenSaintPascal and PlaguePJPPlaguePJP, who rooted for my article specifically since day one.

As a fairly new author, it's been a cool experience to write for the wiki so far and share my thoughts on the world we live in. Let's continue to give our best to create a welcoming writing space everyone can contribute to.
