Los zapaticos de rosa
2024
30 August
«¡Sí, Pilar, dáselo! ¡y eso
también! ¡tu manta! ¡tu anillo!»
Y ella le dio su bolsillo,
le dio el clavel, le dio un beso.
Vuelven calladas de noche
a su casa del jardín;
y Pilar va en el cojín
de la derecha del coche.
Y dice una mariposa
que vio desde su rosal
guardados en un cristal
los zapaticos de rosa.
"What does that mean, baba?" James looked up to the person on whose lap he was sitting on, his parent Jay Everwood.
Jay smiled and looked down at their son, putting down the leatherbound collection of poems by José Martí Ilse had gotten them for Christmas last year. Their face was warm and gentle, as was their hand as they turned the boy around to properly face them. Jay picked the tome back up and showed it to James. "Which part, bud?"
"Um…" He sheepishly covered his eyes with his hands.
"It's okay to not understand it!" Jay grinned, bouncing the six year-old on their lap. "But I'm here if you want to ask questions, which I know you do because you asked. So tell me, buddy, which part do you want to ask about?"
James remained silent but looked away from them.
"James?"
"The whole thing…" he mumbled.
"Don't worry, bud. Metaphors aren't easy, especially for little guys like you."
"I'm not little!" James huffed, frowning as he turned to face his parent again. "I'm big and strong!"
"Sure you are." Jay chuckled, leaning in to kiss him on the forehead. "But no matter what, you'll always be my little guy."
James' frown lightened, eventually turning to a giggle.
"So," they started. "Pilar, the girl with the pink shoes, went back to her mom after giving her pink shoes to the girl who didn't have any."
He nodded.
"And then the mom tells her to give her more and more— her ring, her blanket, her flower, so on so forth."
"What about the butterfly?"
"Good question, bud! The butterfly represents the simple, beautiful nature of her kindness. The crystal and shoes at the end represent how Pilar's kindness that day will forever be remembered."
James seemed to be deep in thought.
"Something on your mind, little guy?" Jay quirked an eyebrow, putting the book aside again.
"Can we go see Uncle Harry at work?"
Jay blinked. "Uh. Sure, bud. Let's get dressed, okay?"
"Okay, baba. I want to grab something too."
"Your Switch?"
"No!" With that, James scampered off to his room.
Jay strode ahead, James holding onto their hand and walking in step as they exited the Inter-Sectional Subway System and entered Site-43's Administration and Oversight section. They were greeted by many office workers shuffling in and out of meetings as the two marched to Archives and Revision. James waved eagerly to each of them as they waved to him, and Jay tossed them each a nod and a smile as they were not wearing their prosthetic.
A few minutes of walking later, the duo had arrived at Archives and Revision and were greeted by Researcher Vide.
"Hi, Miss Vide." James waved eagerly at her.
"Hi, James. Doctor Everwood," she smiled.
"Jennifer." Jay nodded. "Do you know if Harry is in?"
Jennifer nodded in return. "Should be having lunch in his office."
"Thank you!" Jay grinned, tugging for James to follow them. The boy stared at Jennifer for a moment longer than what would be normal, only to look away shyly when she smiled and waved at him. The two walked down the hallway and toward Harry's office, and James used his free hand to tug at his bag, slung over his back.
They found the door open, with Harry eating a sandwich and his wife, Melissa Bradbury, sitting at a spare seat in his office.
"Jay!" Harry smiled, setting down his food and wiping his mouth with a napkin. "If I knew you were coming I would have grabbed a spare chair."
"Hi, Jay," Melissa nodded politely, putting down the fork she had been using to shovel Caesar salad into her gullet.
"Hey, guys. I actually wasn't planning on coming in today." Jay smiled, gently tugging on James' hand to bring him into the room. The boy was staring at Jennifer again. "But James wanted to see Uncle Harry."
"Hi Uncle Harry, hi Auntie Mel!" James jumped up in excitement, causing all adults present to laugh slightly. "Uncle Harry," James stopped bouncing, now sounding gravely serious. "Can you call Mr. Wet?"
"Mr. Wet?" Jay blinked.
"Yeah! Mr. Wet," he affirmed.
The three grown-ups in the room shared a look.
"Do you…" Harry spoke up first. "Do you maybe mean… Wettle?"
Jay bristled. Wettle was a bit of an asshole, and they didn't particularly want James exposed to him and his foul mouth. There was also the fact that Wettle was famously terrible with children, so it wasn't like he wanted to see James either. Things just worked out that way.
"Is that the funny man who keeps falling?" James clarified, completely unaware of everyone present's disdain for the man.
"Yes, buddy. But why do you want to see him?" Jay leaned down.
"I want to see him, and you wouldn't have let us come to the Site if I had asked to see Mr. Wet," he declared proudly.
"You lied to me, James?" Jay blinked.
"I'm sorry, baba."
"We'll talk about this later. For now, fine. I don't know what's so important about you seeing Wettle, but fine. Fine. I guess. You're going to be grounded for lying to me, though."
James whimpered but nodded.
"Harry, call the man over."
His presence was palpable before they even saw him.
All the way down the long hallway leading down to Harry's office the sound of wet footsteps and an annoyed grunt with each step was audible. The closer he got, the louder the muttering was, and the more Jay dreaded seeing him. Eventually, he passed by the open door, groaned, then doubled back to the portal.
"What do you want, Blank."
"Hello, Willie." Harry nodded. "James here actually wanted to see you."
"Who?"
"My son." Jay glared.
"Hi, Mr. Wet." James smiled sheepishly, emerging from behind his baba. "Umm. This is for you."
James removed his Pokémon bag from his back and opened up the Poké-Ball zipper, then pulled out a T-Rex toy.
Wettle, for his part, watched in stunned silence as he was handed a dinosaur toy by a six-year-old. There was an uncomfortable silence as Jay, Melissa, and Harry awaited his next action. He weighed his options. If he expressed how he really felt, Jay would yell at him. If he accepted the toy, Harry would ridicule him. There was no winning move.
"Why are you giving this to me, kid?" was all he could manage.
"Because of a story my baba read to me. It's about how you should give to people who aren't as lucky as you. That's Mr. T-Rex. He's pretty cool. He roars if you pull the thing on his neck!" James smiled, taking the toy back for a second and pulling the tab on its neck. As promised, a pre-recorded roar came sounded from the speaker in its back.
The uncomfortable silence resumed.
James looked on happily.
Jay blinked in confusion.
Harry and Melissa were even more perplexed, which was nothing to say of Wettle, who was so confused he might as well not have been present.
"I also have this!" James reached into his bag again and pulled out a blanket decorated in Poké-Balls. "It's my favorite blanket. I like hiding under it when it storms. Lightning is scary, but Pikachu uses it and he's brave so I have to be brave too!"
"James, I—" Jay started.
Wettle swallowed. He turned slightly right toward the other door near Harry's when suddenly, WHAM! The door swung open and hit him in the face, knocking him to the ground.
"Willie!" Harry, and Melissa cried.
Jay flinched.
"Mr. Wet!" James yelled.
"Eugh…" Wettle grunted, sitting up. His glasses had broken. James, however, was right at his side with a Pokémon-themed Band-Aid. He taped up the man's glasses and handed them back to him with a wide smile.
"Are you okay, Mr. Wet?" The boy grabbed his toys from the floor and placed them on Wettle's chest expectantly.
"That's Dr. Wet to you, kid," he groaned, clutching the bridge of his nose and sliding his glasses back on.
Jay smiled softly, and reached down to help Wettle up.
He could be okay, they guessed. But more importantly, they were proud of James.
The kid was alright.
