Laurel Brinley adjusted his tie for the fourth time in five minutes. Up until last week, he had been a mid-level actuary in a beige cubicle. Now, thanks to the sudden, explosive demise of a distant great-uncle he’d never met, he was the sole owner and CEO of Jamison Mining Company.
He sat behind his desk, staring at a ledger that made absolutely no sense. The list didn't read like a mining company.
A soft knock at the door broke his concentration.
"C-come in," Laurel called out, projecting executive authority.
The door clicked open, and a young woman slipped into the room. She wore an oversized grey cardigan, thick glasses, and had mousy brown hair pulled into a messy bun. She clutched a thick manila folder to her chest like a shield.
"Uhm, excuse me, Mr. Brinley, sir?" she squeaked, eyes fixed firmly on the corner of his desk. "I, ah, I brought the incident files for the…the Yukon property. Asset Site 94."
Laurel sighed in relief. Finally, a normal corporate term. "Thank you. You’re the secretary, right? Uh…..I'm sorry, my great-uncle's notes just referred to you as 'Rabbit'."
"Oh! Y-yes, sir. Rabbit is fine. Everyone calls me that," she stammered, shuffling forward to gently place the file on his desk. She took two quick leaps back, wringing her hands. "It’s, uhm, regarding the anomaly in the primary shaft."
Laurel frowned, flipping the folder open. "The what? Anomaly? Is that a geological term? Like a fault line?"
Rabbit blinked, her eyes wide behind her lenses. "Oh. Uhm. I suppose you could call it a fault line. Just…..uhm…a fault line in local reality, sir. It, ah, tends to swallow things. And sometimes….rarely spit things back out."
Laurel stared at her, waiting for a punchline. None came. Rabbit just looked nervously at her shoes.
He looked down at the file. The first page was a faded, sepia-toned photograph of a woman in heavy 19th-century winter gear, followed by a series of written dairy entries.
"Rabbit, what am I looking at here?"
"That is, uhm, Miss Rose Orioan, sir," Rabbit said softly. "She was a consultant we brought in back in 1894 to survey the surrounding area. She…sh-she didn't come back up."
"A cave-in?" Laurel asked, knot forming in his stomach.
"N-no, sir. The tunnels just….broke. We didn't recover her. We only recovered her phonograph and diary equipment." Rabbit shifted her weight. "The retrieval team found a single wax cylinder. When they played it back, it was just…three minutes of her screaming. And, uhm, something else laughing in the background."
Laurel slowly closed the folder. The reality of his great-uncle’s company was beginning to crash down on him. Wasn't this meant to be a mining company?! This was something else entirely. He thought of the weird acronyms in the ledgers—SCP hush-money, UIU bribes, GOC hazard pay.
"Rabbit," Laurel said, his voice trembling. "Are you telling me that I own a mountain that eats people?"
Rabbit gasped softly, her hands flying up to her mouth. "Oh! Oh, no, Mr. Brinley! Please, don't look so pale! I didn't mean to frighten you!"
She took a hesitant step forward, offering a comforting, and genuine smile.
"You really shouldn't worry too hard about the wax cylinder, sir," she said gently, her tone was attempting to be soothing. "The screaming was just the first time we had the audio technology to record the anomaly properly! The event's have actually been swallowing miners and equipment since the early 1700s. It's perfectly routine."
Laurel just stared, his mind completely blank. "The….the early 1700s. Now how, exactly, do you know that?"
Rabbit let out a shy chuckle, adjusting her glasses.
"Oh, well, you get to know the company history when you do the filing, sir," she said brightly. "I've been assisting the director's office since 1724! You’ll get the hang of it in a few decades, I promise."
She gave him one last polite nod and quietly slipped out of the office, closing the door with a soft click.
"…What."
