a harmless pill, medicine, or procedure prescribed more for the psychological benefit to the patient than for any physiological effect.

In my dreams I see myself looking back
A construct of what I believe
And I now know my psyche is under attack
By the trick I no longer believe

SCP-5763 is a placebo that works. Under very careful doses, I can see both worlds at once. Reds and golds waving in my vision, blues and greys lurking alongside them.

I was once blind.

I can see again.

"Once upon a time, I dreamt I was a butterfly, fluttering hither and thither, to all intents and purposes a butterfly. I was conscious only of my happiness as a butterfly, unaware that I was myself. Soon I awaked, and there I was, veritably myself again. Now I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly, dreaming I am a man."

Except it's clear now. We are neither. Man is butterfly. Butterfly is man.

To think we were ever anything difference is insanity.

We weren't meant to awaken in the first place.

For a drug that doesn't work, precision is the key.

In my slumber, I understand my mistakes. And in waking, I can correct them.

Where did we go wrong?

I don't know.

Do you think it can be put back together?

…Jamie?

You're Jamie.

I know.

The ballad of a man named Faust, a person who seeked a means to an end.

Faust was bored, a scholarly life up on his gilded throne and comfortable office desk chairs too monotone. After driving himself to the brink, he forces up a demon of the darkest depths to gain knowledge, powers that would let him see the entire world for what it was.

The Devil's Representative, Mephistopheles, appears, striking a unique deal. Magical powers, cognitive capabilities and rationale far exceeding baseline reality, for a time.

But when the time ran out.

Researcher Robertson would be found dead in his office

Are you a demon?

You're not going to get an answer. Not like that.

I know that.

Faust would go on to meet many people, and abuse his newly found powers of the demonic and anomalous world to claim all he wanted for himself.

He was untouchable.

We only have one option, don't we?

I really don't want to.

We have to.

Item #: SCP-5763

Object Class: Keter, although it could also be very Safe?

Special Containment Procedures: Cut your losses. If you can't do that, avoid taking agnostics completely. Taking even one can open you up to him.

Description: SCP-5763 is either an unknown entity that governs a world of psychology adjacent to ours, giving gifts of sight, to things we aren't meant to understand, but at a heavy price; or is a powerful hallucinogen that enables comprehension of things that aren't even real.

Testing inconclusive.

Addendum:

Jamie. This isn't.

Stop it.

Jamie.

How do we get rid of Him?

Jamie, you won't lik-

Is He even real?

Are agnostics?

Well?

Did we open up a doorway, did we make a literal demon, or did we get too drugged?

You know just as well as me.

I don't think that's ours to decide.

Then whose is it?
