Chosen cliche: Compulsion effect that makes you do bad things/kills you.

The compulsion here is to lie about the existence of the object as best as you can, treating it like an inside joke.

Also for Miku's first challenge.

Also for a challenge Peppers proposed on a discord to introduce something before the conprocs which has diegetic significance.

Originally this was literally a gaslit lamp, but that was too obvious and also you can't stab people with a lantern.

The Jackass level of commitment to the prank it inspires is quite impressive. Shame the researcher didn't realise that it was the knife causing that. Or try to destroy it (…with potential The Cat Came Back / Wile E Coyote type shenanigans developing from the attempt(s), played absolutely straight)

Also, the number of (0)55's in this, deliberate as another layer of in-joke, or accidental / subconscious? And is the year meant to be 2055? NB seeing as the actual locker number is given multiple times in the body text, maybe worth putting "in standard anomalous item storage locker P-9055" as the crossed-out containment location rather than "a standard anomalous item storage locker"?

Deliberate. The year isn't a reference to the scp 2055, just intended as another layer of the in-joke.

As for P-9055, it's a holdover from the first go at the article, where the P is intended to indicate a provisional containment vessel instead of a permanent one. I ended up keeping it because, provisional or not, it still very much is significant in-universe that it's placed where it was. It's not in the containment procedures, however, because the narrator at first found the specific locker inconsequential, and it became completely irrelevant once the narrator realized it was a joke.

I wish you hadn't so strongly implied that it's necessarily a joke, and gone on to clarify that it is in the comments here — but I understand you had to in order to qualify for the cliche contest. That aside, it's still an excellent premise with a pretty creepy execution.

That's my only complaint too. I really hope that, after the contest's over, Dolphin goes back and edits it, because that could take it from being excellent to being astounding. Upvoted regardless, because this is exactly the kind of stuff I look for in an SCP.

I'd maybe take it further and actually have a wholly different, innocuous item in the 4955 slot but with KNIFE put in the addenda and logs as the researcher's way of recording something about the thing, even though its effect is causing everyone else to do their level best to pretend it doesn't exist, including not excising those otherwise out-of-place materials.

I disagree. I think it's made way creepier by the fact people treat it like a joke. There's an inherent freakiness to something dangerous or scary happening to you, while everyone around you laughs or ignores you.

EDIT: People not treating you seriously in-general is scary. It makes you feel like a defenseless kid.

Personally, I found it less creepy because the implication is that it ISN'T a joke and it just makes people act like it is. See, I felt it was creepier before that because it's either:

• A joke that everybody is committing to totally for no apparent reason.
• The protagonist is going insane.

This is what sells the horror of the article so well to me. It's funny as fuck but also really offputting and frightening.

I quite like it, including the format screw, the only thing bothering me is that I think we already have a "knife which makes people not care / be unable to react when you use it for killing folk" somewhere back in series 1… Or at least, used to. Maybe it got decommissioned. It's so hard to keep track these days.

Actually there have been a lot of similar articles recently, SCP-3041, SCP-3154, SCP-4514.

That has partially led me to downvote this. I wasn't super impressed by informal tone direct statements as the only storytelling method. It was somewhat creepy, but not strong enough as an article or concept to merit rehashing this idea again.

Edit: I feel like there's definitely the Bright's First Challenge issue poking through, this could've used more polish.

I really liked this. The format screw is nice, and the constant laughter of everyone who witnesses the violence with the knife really did the creepiness for me. +1
