Not posted anywhere, but I've got a draft outlined that would reference in-universe versions of a few different real life occult societies:

For brainstorming purposes only

The Freemasons / The Order of the Eastern Star (mostly focused on economics and politics, but they do use magic — Eastern Star is the female-only affiliate org of the male-only Masons)

Ordo Templi Orientis (Aleister Crowley's "Thelemites")

The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (primarily American, in contrast to the European Golden Dawn which is also occult but iirc more pro-fascist)

The Rosicrucian Society (began in Europe but enjoyed greatest popularity in Latin America — much like Catholicism, whose symbolism it often syncretises)

Santeria (a real life syncretistic religion, which to my understanding was developed by African-Americans striving to hold onto their own religious traditions while enslaved)

Discordianism (a joke religion / "real" religion comprised primarily of jokes invented by two Americans in the late 1960s on an acid trip)

LaVeyan Satanism (a real but not very popular religion which explicitly teaches the use of occult magic)

The Satanic Temple (a real but explicitly atheist organization — in-universe they could easily be affiliated with SAPPHIRE)

I have pondered, often, that the organized occult societies I've encountered on the wiki lean heavily towards Western and particularly European traditions. This likely reflects my own reading preferences and thus may not be accurate! But the Council of 108 is global.

One of the toughest questions I have about most of the organizations I mentioned is: are they more likely to have sought membership in the GoC, or the Horizon Initiative? Where do people in-universe draw that line?

I've gotta think every human culture group has found its own ways to approach in-universe magical practice. Possibly if you go back in history, whichever people were indigenous to a particular place may have initially developed their shamanic traditions in self-defense against whatever types of anomalies were most prevalent there.

At some point, the GoC must have figured out a way to synthesize and standardize all those different pathways to knowledge.

What I think are a few of the main differences between the GOC and the Horizon Initiative is, firstly, that the Horizon Initiative, from the GOIs page, originated in the 1960s, whereas, the GOC, like the UN, came about from a predecessor organization the Allied Occult Initiative, which was an organization that fought the German Obskurakorps during WWII/Occult War VII. (The AOI's history is mentioned in SCP-3457 and in the History section of the Three Portlands page

As such, it would seem that the GOC is older and has a more cemented reputation in the parahuman world, and probably seen as a bit more distinguished.

Thematically, it seems to me that the GOC's council is moreso made of "conspiracy" type organizations, shadow government type shit, which are able to get along with all types of sorts, while the HI is purely Abrahamic, and hostile to the Church of the Broken God, and the Fifth Church, which the GOC wouldn't necessarily be, I feel. So like, shadow government council VS and order of religious extremist types, it seems to me.

I could be wrong, insofar as general consensus, but that's how I view it.

I personally doubt that any organization that is affiliated with SAPPHIRE could work together with the GOC. They're just too different.

• Passing Notes In Class (a Ressurection tale) also mentions the Sisters of perpetual Vigilance as an organization, "that is technically still part of the Council". They seem to be removed enough, that an O5 was able to use their codes.
• I don't know where it is mentioned, but Manna Charitable was in some article considered as an Organization that could join the Council of 108 but isn't yet part of it.

And if we're adding Organizations appearing in drafts that weren't mentioned yet on-site: The Electorate of Demomancers (a vote and Democracy based Magic). They mainly monitor elections for anomalous influence and handle the GOC's alternative to amnestics: A magically enhanced Mandela Effect.

This list and this other list are currently the most complete and up to date ones on the 108. The first one is in Japanese but there are English translations for the names and Google Translate should give you a rough translation of the contents.

PENTAGRAM is also mentioned to be a part of the council, which doesn't seem like it would go over well with the more peace-loving groups but oh well.
