A core of buckminsterfullerene? Really, Buckyballs? Why?
Dr. Bright
That…. would make more sense.
See, I've only encountered buckminsterfullerene in sci-fi stories i've read, where it is used as diamond that has been crystallised in the heat of a star or some such, and was also used for time travel.
Nope. Actually, ordinary fullerene spheres occur regularly in ash. Tubes require more engineering, though.
Although if you think strengthening it with carbon nanotubes is a little too over-the-top I can remove it - I was mostly concerned that the ordinary wooden core wouldn't be strong enough to pierce shoes.
…Any thoughts on some of the other concepts I included?
I like the idea of the vicious man-eating grass, and the line about using borrowed cows to clear an area.
One suggestion: have you considered backwards-pointing barbs so that once the blade goes in, it doesn't come back out without ripping up the flesh, instead tearing off at the base so that you basically have a straw stabbed in your foot that pours blood?
Ooh… except that it might stop looking like grass. Maybe the barbs deploy in response to hydraulic stimulus (like a venus flytrap snapping shut when its trigger hairs are touched)? That could be painful. I'll add it. >:)
Oh, other thing. Since this seems to be the first report that directly references an SCP with known properties not in Foundation hands, could we establish some sort of system referring to them? I've temporarily used "SCP-CI-103" with the considerations that it is an SCP object, but does not belong the SCP Foundation and would probably have notes kept on it separate from the main SCP object list (thus requiring a different numbering system).
My question is, why is this even an SCP? Even if it kills stuff, it does so in a purely physical manner. It's a plant. It evolved that way. It warrants containment because it could damage an ecosystem if released, but that's not 'Special' containment. Also, it's not an unknown species if we know what its genes look like. Just make up some binomial nomenclature.
For the same reasons as, for example, SCP-008. Or SCP-143. Or SCP-165. Or any number of other biologically-based SCPs.
And yes, it is an unknown species. It is phylogenetically distinct from any other known organism - there is no such thing, I assure you, as vampire tree grass, related to mahogany or not - and there are strong indications that it is non-indigenous to the planet ("deposited" is rather ambiguous - I have a fairly good idea of what SCP-CI-103 is, but did not replicate it in the entry, as in any other document).
Would it be possible for someone with photoediting skills to tint the image as if it were seen under a slightly red light? Thanks.
This what you want?
I'm on an LCD monitor, so I'm not entirely certain how it looks…
Mmm… it looks kind of orange/brown. And dead, which isn't quite what I had in mind.
The article describes it as being kept under a red light to suppress growth rates (though in retrospect that seems like an odd choice, as the color absorbed least in photosynthesis is green - hence why leaves reflect it), but my understanding is that simply giving the picture a red filter would cause the green grass to go mostly black, which would defeat the purpose of having a picture in the first place…? My apologies, it's sort of an odd request and I'm not quite sure of myself at the moment.
Maybe never mind, and I'll just use the original image. Sorry for the trouble.
hmm. this more along the lines of what you were looking for?
if that's too intense i can reduce it, but the grass still looks green, just lit with red light
Man eating barbed grass with weird properties. I like it. +1
Maybe it's not "special" but it needs containing, and possibly some investigation and research.
(I can see it being used as a bioweapon if it can be altered to reduce reproduction and spread. The sort of thing a terrorist group might want. Possibly.)
Is the last "REDACTED" supposed to be a link to the SCP-354 log? If so, I'm missing the connection.
That's… actually a really good question. I'm not sure why Noaqiyeum would put a link to a different article in like that.
Since the original author has only appeared twice (in May) in the last 18+ months, that might be a question for Senior Staff.
It looks pretty intentional to me. Mystery solved, on to scooby snaks. *raps gavel*
Object yer honor! Just cuz the author did it doesn't mean we understand it! I move for a round of wild speculation, degenerating into two or more off topic threads!
In the previous exploratory log (day 11), sharp, blade-like grass was encountered and one of the agent's hands was lacerated when he tripped over it.
For future reference, this is why. (As far as I know 354 and 355 were created entirely separately, but the fact that they're adjacent numbers and the one seems to refer to the other was too good a coincidence not to make mention of.)
i saw the picture, and was suddenly hopeful that malevolent yards were growing their own "keep off grass" signs.
oh well, i like this one anyway.
That's positively begging for a J entry off this SCP.
