I feel semi-guilty about this one. I just really like crabs, and wanted to do something with them. this is a combination of several ideas I've had floating around for a long time, and i just mashed them all together. Please let me know any thoughts, or any edits you feel it could use. In addition, i think I'm going to do a log from someone who's house gets infested with these things.
It's very creepy. Toss in something with organic matter, and you've got sheer terror. Malevolent dopplegangers scare the shit out of just about everybody.

Copy/pasting from something I posted elsewhere.
236 - Bomb Mites. They're made of silicon and copper and gears and pulleys, yet they make copies of themselves out of *organic* material? After laying a METAL egg that unfolds into an exact copy of themselves? Ignoring the 'nearly subatomic' nature of their construction, that's…..pretty much completely impossible from the laws of physics as we know them…Editing is the key here though, as they are quite interesting…remove the mechanical aspect, make them totally biological.
I have to agree…I tried to mash up too many things, and screwed it up in the process. I'm going to look it over and see if i can't streamline things a bit, get the concepts more refined. If anyone else has suggestions as well, PLEASE feel free.
Edited - Now a purely organic (if very weird) swarm. Let me know if this is better/worse, and i'll keep trying to put polish on it.
Looks good. Needs a bit of clean-up, but I'm sure you'll have time for a once-over later.
Since they use only organic substances and yet appear to be synthetic, have you thought of carbon nanotech as a basis for their construction/computation? It explains why they need to target carbon based substrates, as well as how they differ from an actual living organism.
A thought.
I might try and work that in, but I'd have to do some research so I don't fumble it. I'm still fiddling with some structural stuff and just trying to get the whole thing more streamlined. I'll see if i can knock out another edit after i finish working on one or two other entries of mine as well.
"This mimicry is near perfect under casual observation, and ."
and …..
I didn't notice that at first, but you're right. What's supposed to be there?
So, if these things are able to mimic almost anything, exhibit unusual proficiency at tactics, effectively double their size every six hours, fully consume a human in less than five minutes, explode if anything tries to mess with them, and open fricking doors, why isn't the Earth just one big ball of crab by now?
barely big enough to see, but each one explodes like a 20lb block of c4? seriously?
My thoughts exactly. I mean, threatening a fucking pen made out of these would probably level a good area. These are just overpowered.
