Q: The Black Queen? The fuck is this shit? That ain't no kind of GoI I ever heard of! Explain this bullshit immediately!
A: The Black Queen is a character created by Gears. She's smart, strong, and capable. And also Gears' daughter, and she's looking for answers some ███ years after her father's disappearance. The two main branches of the story were Broken Hearts, in which she stays sane and gets reluctantly drawn into the world of the anomalous, and Black Queen, in which she goes full Jigsaw Killer and dives headfirst into the Masquerade. This particular version of the Queen is probably closer to the Broken Hearts version.
Q: Wait, the Black Queen… Wasn't that Fis-
A: Yes, there was a GoI known as the Black Queen that was since removed at a user's request. No, that's not what this is based on. This is based off of Gears' version, which, as he puts it, "other than the name and some basic habits, they share no real relation."
Q: How the fuck is she a GoI? She's literally one person! What kind of a bullshit group is that!?
A: The mind fairly boggles.
Q: Why don't you have a hub? Are you gaming the system in some manner?
A: No. The first three tales of this contest are going to be about introducing the Black Queen and filling the reader in on some stuff that would be too ungainly to unpack in a single tale. The hub is supposed to have information about how to write for the Black Queen, and as such would contain spoilers. But all good things to those who wait.
Re: Question 3
Hey, if Nobody (who is more or less one person) counts as a GOI (which s/he does in my opinion), then so does the Black Queen. I always thought of GOIs more as the major players in the behind-the-scenes world that the Foundation operates in, and given the amount of trouble BQ is capable of causing the Foundation, I think she qualifies.
Interesting choice to make her partially Chinese, btw.
Giving bearhugs to the unsuspecting since 1872.
You can forge a new GoI to compete in the GoI contest?
Huh.
Not really. There's a preexisting thing that we're dealing with and responding to, just like every other team. The fact that the Black Queen isn't on the GOI page doesn't really give us any more or less creative freedom than any other group.
No chess puns? I demand chess puns!
Nice start. Keep going.
This is a quite lovely story. I really like it.
My main critique is that the paragraphs are fairly big, and that slows the pace and makes it slightly harder to read. If acceptable (check with Troy?) you may want to break some of those up a bit more.
Very good, though. Excited for what's next.
I've never been too big a fan of the Black Queen. I have always found the BQ GOI Formats a bit too silly, with coloured text that felt more like chatroom shenanigans, or maybe the brainstorming phase of a coauthored SCP, than a well thought out format. Of course, that's only one part of the Black Queen, and the stories I read in those formats were never about her.
This was something else. This small peek into Alison's life describes images that feel genuinely magical.1 It uses interspersed vignettes of backstory and current events that are effective in giving a reason to care in earnest for the character. I really appreciate what I've read here.
