This is the 2nd case study with a 3rd (and final) planned for the future.
The first case study is perhaps my favorite non-SCP work on the site. I never expected a sequel, but damn this does not disappoint. Will the 3rd be about Neo-Sarkics?
thank you thank you thank you for making this
throws confetti everywhere
Cannot express how much I love this. This is like a piece of magic realism set in Europe. It presented Nälkä in a measured, detailed, vivid way that made it feel like a real belief system, in spite of its anomalous nature. It's like a Ken Burns documentary in text. I also desperately needed this resource right now because I'm writing about American Neo-Sarkics. Seeing the original faith, of which theirs is a mangled copy, is maximally inspiring.
Brilliant evocation of the subject! I've read descriptions of actually existing human societies that weren't this well presented. You had me feeling real sympathy for people who don't exist, which is a commendable artistic accomplishment.
I really like this. It allows for a (mostly) unbiased look at Nalka, one of the most obscure cultures of the SCPverse. It's like a documentary.
Love it. +1
Typo stuff:
The 2nd paragraph of History:
"By the Early Modern Period, whey endured pogroms alongside Roma and Jews despite having no discernible relationship to either."
I'm guessing that should be "they endured".
and the first paragraph of Culture, Tradition, and Misconceptions:
"Examples of this include the presence "saints" (svatých) which do not fit under traditional Sarkic hagiography"
"Presence of "saints"" maybe?
Anyhow, awesome article. Keep that stuff coming!
Is NalkaNalka a typo?
I am not your enemy, Dr. Desmarais. I simply desire your honesty. You have limited knowledge of the Foundation. Let us say that our 'monsters' pale in comparison to the horrors your associates have unleashed upon the world. ("Ah, but always for the greater good… that is what they repeat, letting it wash over them again and again… a simple self-deception to sleep so much better at night…")
Okay, I know this is a dig on their part at the Foundation trying to act self righteous when… well, ya know, they’re the SCP Foundation, but some part of me couldn’t help but find some perfect irony in the fact that he was saying the Foundation were monsters because they acted in duty to “a greater good”, when the latter portion of his answers revolve around an ultimately similar sort of headspace, and how he’s secure in that knowledge and repeats it a couple of times for good measure.
And the best thing is it’s not a big “aha, they’re just as bad”moment or anything that black and white, but simply a small element, a really believable and humanizing characterization for a very human character, I feel, and I have to commend this tale on that pervasive aspect, if nothing else. This feels very human, very real and palpable with how their society works—the fact there’s a interview with a person who’s faith wavered and the embarrassed admittance of that fact, and comparing Ion to Buddha, it all just feels incredibly natural and ties in surprisingly well with the more supernatural and vioelnt aspects of the Sarkic culture. It shows a believable middle point between the old, discussed in your first of these (and also one of my personal favourite tales), and what “Sarkic” means to people nowadays.
Super excited to see what that will be like when the time comes, by the by! And in the meanwhile, there’s always this great thing to look lver to pass that time and prepare for it!
Damn.
Metaphysician, your writing is intense, well-thought out, and utterly engrossing. Surrounded on all sides by peers of incredible talent, you stand tall amongst them. Be proud of your skill, friend, for it is a joy to observe.
+1 with pleasure.
