Hi! So, we've been told that people are asking about what the image team is doing, and why some images are being taken down, and oh god did I use the wrong image am I going to be banned???
Well, worry not dear reader, because things are just fine.
You see, I have assembled a crack team of people with too much time on their hands to help me in my quest to make sure all images used on the site are CC compliant. If you have an article with an image taken down, it was because the image violated CC. Now, we may leave the image itself alone, and only go after the page code that displays it. This is because we're contacting the image creator for permission. Once we have that, the image will be restored.
To answer a few questions I've heard, frequently asked by many of you fine souls:
I had an image taken down! Does this mean I'm in trouble?
Nope! It simply means that the image was not compliant. Since the staff in the past five years did not give a rats ass about images, a large number of non-compliant images sneaked into the site. You were not told that it was a bad thing, so punishing you would be meaningless.
Now, after we get this all done, and make a few changes to make sure nobody can say "I didn't know"(Probably by editing the template, rules, etc.) you might get in some amount of trouble. We'll see how that works out. But if you posted an article at any time before now, and really probably for another couple of months while we get used to the new policy, you won't get more than a "don't do it again".
Who is doing all this image taking downing?
A list of which blocks have been assigned to whom can be found here. We are still accepting volunteers, so if you wish to help, please come into #site77 on IRC! Note that helping with this project is NOT an automatic guarantee of any promotion of any sort at any time, but it will get you noticed by one of our most outstanding and handsome staff members!
Will I be told if my image is taken down?
Our people are supposed to be sending out PM's to those who have images in violation. If you had an image taken down and did not recieve a PM, please tell me in PM and link to the article in question so I know who to yell at.
Don't I, as page owner, have final say over what happens to my page?
Content-wise? Absolutely. But this is a legal matter. If the image you have is in violation of the law, we will remove it. Simple as that.
If you have any further questions, or just want to comment on the project, feel free to leave a comment here!
Whether you like it or not, history is on our side. We will bury you!
