Author Overview

Thanks to Voct, CryogenChaos, Djoric, TwistedGears, Iceforge, Wogglebug, and many, many other chat users who read through this and helped craft this skip into what it is now.

The inspiration for this came from the idea of damnatio memoriae: I was reading about the Turin King List (aka a list of Egyptian pharaohs), and a few entries were wiped out, or too damaged to read. My imagination went "Hey, what if that was intentional," and this happened.

EDIT: Oh, and the image is from the Global Egyptian Museum.

Slight necro, but that was totally intentional on the Egyptians' part. If I recall correctly, a person can't get into the afterlife if records/proof, including their body and any documents, weren't preserved according to ancient Egyptian culture. Cremation and censorship like that were used as a way to condemn people to purgatory.

Good job dude, who was it that came up the movement in the sarcophagus? Brilliant idea, I think there could be more depth from a test experiment of moving a unconscious test subject to it, and then waking them up just for gigs.

I'm not seeing why the information that's a level 4 clearance needs that clearance. It doesn't seem like information that would tempt less trustworthy people to do something, or be dangerous knowledge to have, and it isn't an infohazard or memetic hazard. And I'm also not seeing why public knowledge of Ba-Ka is to be minimized, unless legends about Ba-Ka either hint as to where to find the SCP or hint as to how to duplicate what Ba-Ka did.

The idea is, if people know that Ba-Ka attempted to gain immortality, they're going to start digging. The Foundation knows little to nothing about the mage. If they start digging, they could find some record or legend that refers to how Ba-Ka attempted to gain immortality, and that would be very, very, bad. Therefore, the safest route to go is to simply erase Ba-Ka from memory. If no one knows about the immortality-crazed pharaoh, then no one's going to go looking for how he tried to gain immortality.

But the Foundation already has a bunch of methods of gaining immortality. I don't see how one more, which is way more nebulous and unknown than the bunch we already know about is such a serious issue that the Foundation has to lock down everything, Class A everyone, and try to destroy public knowledge. There's all kinds of legends about attempts to gain immortality. What's one more in the pile?

Basically, until there's a reason for the SUPER-SECRETness, which seems to be the main hook, to be so, I'm downvoting.

Apologies. I don't think of myself as particularly negative, but there is one rather big problem with this article. And I'm not the only person to have this issue with the article. If you got the other one fixed up, you can do this one too.

Honestly, I think trying to erase information about it is actually the worse way to go. After all, in terms of immortality there's a whole crapton of people in history, myth, and legend who have tried to gain it. Ba-Ka would just be be one more on the pile. That said, if someone twigs to the fact that men in dark suits are very seriously trying to erase everything about this guy then… hey, maybe there actually might _be_ something to that one guy's quest for immortality.

The difference is, Ba-Ka succeeded. Not in the way that he might have liked, but he succeeded nonetheless.

Yeah, but outside of the Foundation, who's actually going to know that he succeeded? Even if some tablet says that the ritual was successful, no one's likely to believe it. And heck even the records that the foundation found suggests that he died a horrible death rather than succeeded.

One thing that bugs me: according to the way it's written, the Magic Line only makes you not want to go closer. I'd think threats of death would easily make you do something you didn't want to do.

Threats of violence, up to, and including death as a punishment for refusing to enter SCP-1644's active area have failed, as individuals will continue to refuse to enter SCP-1644, even when such threats have been carried out.

This is unintentionally hilarious. "If you don't go into the area, I will kill you." "No! I… I can't." *BANG* "Still won't go in?" … "All right, mark that down, he's continuing to refuse."

This doesn't really improve it too much either. Now we've got some mythical book that allegedly contains an immortality ritual. I still don't see how this warrants the AMNESTICS-ARE-CANDY containment, and the general over-the-topness of this. Cripes, we've got so many immortality methods already, and in real life, there's so many legends of rulers who sought immortality. What makes this special?

I can't say I found this terribly interesting. The main description is fairly dull, and the things Anaxagoras points out didn't really convince me that I needed to read pages and pages about whatever baka made this thing to uncover the full story.
