All praise to Aelanna for making the new theme come to life. (All I did was point the site to the new theme.)
My word this is different. Similar to what Aelanna showed me a while back, but seeing it in action is quite something. Further thoughts to come later after I have a chance to metabolize the change.
it looks amazing! much improvement and modernization.
one eensy weensy gripe: it looks like the content column is fixed to being less wide than it used to be, which compresses article text and doesn't make the best use of the screen real estate. would it be possible to make the theme reflow & fill the width like the old one did?
(it's not a problem or anything if it takes any effort!)
Thanks!
A staff vote was taken with arguments for both sides, and Fixed Width won out due to the consistency of presentation, especially for the front page. We've chosen to stick with this template for now, but it's something we'll certainly keep in mind if it turns out to not work in the long run.
Edit: For those who are willing to do a client-side override to return the site to dynamic width and you are willing to install a browser plugin like Stylish to do it, here's this bit of CSS for you:
#content-wrap { margin: 2em 0 0 !important; width: auto !important; padding: 0 2em !important; } #side-bar { left: 2em !important; }
Edit 2: Here's a screenshot of how it should look for the Stylish extension on Chrome; I'm assuming the Firefox addon is similar.
Is there a reason why the fixed width was set to this particular width? I suspect there is, and I suspect it has something to do with mobile devices, but I wanted to ask anyway.
!!! I didn't realize this was an option. That's crazy awesome. It's the best of both worlds.
Edit: From what I understand, instead of just selecting the URL, in Firefox you have to do it with
@-moz-document domain(www.scp-wiki.net) {
#content-wrap { margin: 2em 0 0 !important; width: auto !important; padding: 0 2em !important; }
#side-bar { left: 2em !important; }
}
although I might be wrong.
Ok, now this is a great addition. The articles were difficult for me to read in the new mode. Thank you for the mod.
Thank you for supplying us with this. I'm pretty happy with the changes now that it fills up my browser properly.
The decision to have a fixed width instead of dynamic was a general staff decision.
Whoa, I wasn't expecting this when I got home! I like it a lot! Good job!
The old sidebar was seriously subpar. I don't see the appeal.
if your reading this your gay
The old sidebar was awful, so while it may shift again in the future, it's never going to go back to the way it was.
If you have a specific request, you can always leave it here.
Not going to happen while we're stuck on Wikidot; we have no access to actual structural changes or major features, only visual overhauls.
im gonna have to say this, because i didn't give a good look at my problem above.
i think the new site looks great. I see no problem with keeping it as it is.
The problem i have is that i cannot remember people complaining about the ugliness of the old layout. Instead there are several complains about technical problems. I dont know if there were places where people said they want a new layout, but if there arent, this was uncalled for. newgrounds did that, cheezburger did that and dont even get me started on youtube.
This is not a request to change back. It is a request to keep that in mind before doing such things. And again: if i just didn't see the complains, ignore all of the above.
tl/dr: If something works and it wouldn't get significantly better by changing it, change is not required.
I like both, only some dislike the new.
Looks a lot more immersive and sleek. Good job
