This year we are trying to fund a haunted house in State College, PA through crowd sourcing and sponsorships called State of Terror; while brain storming ideas for possible 2014 themes we thought about the SCP foundation. We want to be a different type of haunted house that uses legitimately creepy and dark atmosphere mixed with live actors to get under your skin and I thought that SCP had some genuinely creepy ideas. Before we do anything else though, we want to make sure the community is okay with this. We also would like to know if you have any suggestions for us.

State College is located in the center of Pennsylvania in between Philadelphia and New York to the East and Pittsburgh to the West. So you could still easily come see us even if you don't live in State College. Currently we only have a Facebook page but if you like the idea please come over and like us; it really does help.

Also, you should check out the licensing guide to make sure you're all squared away before you use anything specific from the site.

Shame I'm not visiting my family up there around that time next year. I would love to see an SCP-themed Haunted house.

Definitely check with the licensing guide…it will tell you what you have to do for proper attribution and such. Additionally, you should probably check with individual authors (if they're around) and get their permission if you want to use their scip. If they aren't around, contact a member of staff and they'll point you in the right direction.

I can't speak for the community as a whole, so I'm not going to try. But personally, I'd love seeing a legit SCP-themed haunted house. This site has some awesomely creepy stuff and if you pull it off right, I'd say your haunted house will be amazing. Given that I live in Indiana, I might be able to make my way over. Doubtful, but possible.

Do they actually have to check with every author about use of the scips? That seems, polite, but unnecessary since everything on the site falls under the creative commons license and is released in the same manner. As long as they attribute the wiki in general and for any specific SCP item or tale, they must attribute the individual article as well as the wiki.

This is where things get a little complicated. You see, any content based on the SCP Foundation is itself going to be under Creative Commons. So anything you make, you agree to share as well under these same rules. The best way to do this is to provide a link to the Creative Commons License. http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/.

This also means that anyone making stuff derived from your work has to attribute you as one of the creators. You can't stop them from doing so, but you can ask them to attribute you in the way you see fit, such as linking back to your web page or project page.

They don't have to, no. I suppose I should have clarified that. It is not mandatory for you to check with individual authors. Its just considered polite to do so, plus they can help you get the feel of the item right. All that's required is proper attribution. Looking back at the post, it does sound like you must consult the author, and I apologize for the unclear wording.

Thanks for clarifying. You definitely are right that it can help people get the right feel for a scip which results in a better final production truer to the subject matter. Plus, I'm sure most authors would be happy to hear about their work being used.

1. Are you willing to give visible credit to the SCP Foundation for the SCP object and characters you use, including providing a link to the wiki on your literature?
2. Will you talk with us and the respective authors abou the SCPs you use and your protrayal of them?
3. Do you plan to run the storyline, presentation, etc by the community and take our feedback into consideration?

If you do these little things for us, I'd be in full support and would even drive out from Topton to see it. I love haunted attractions, and I think it would be awesome provided you get the budget to do it well. To be fair, the only things actually required of you are those listed in the licensing guide. The other things I mentioned here are just ways to make us like you more. :3

Dude, this is such a cool idea. If you do it right and go by the licensing guide and such (and credit the site/authors) it'll be amazing. I live in PA so if this gets off the ground I would gladly come by. (State College is a bit of a hike from Pittsburgh, but considering this is an SCP HAUNTED HOUSE I think I can make it work.) Seems like it'd be nice and scary and also a good way to meet up with other people from the site. You have my support.

We are really excited by all the positive feedback. We intend to fully credit the individual authors as well as the site as a whole. We also want your feedback.
For now, the best way to show your support for this project and to make sure that it has the best chance of happening is to check our Facebook and to tell others. The more supporters we have the more likely it will happen. We have the experience to make this a reality but we need all the help we can get. If you have questions please direct them to us on the Facebook page or through e-mail. We will also be regularly posting to this site letting the community know about our progress. Check back often!

Okay, I'm speaking from an Admin position here. We've had similar situations before, so I'm fairly confident in what I'm about to say. First of all, you would be REQUIRED to include somewhere that this is based off our site, provide our website address, and note that your HH material has inherited the CC license. This includes not only the link to the main page, but if you're including specific SCP items, you need to include links to their pages as well. I think that this could be easily handled by a handout listing all of that either given to patrons or even just posted someplace easily viewable by patrons. As for contacting individual authors: it's polite, but not required. Especially considering that some authors are no longer active or possibly not even on the site anymore, it may not even be possible to reach everyone.

That said, not only can't we stop you from doing this, we don't want to, so long as you adhere to the CC restrictions of providing backlinks to whatever you use/incorporate.

The best way to contact individual authors would be going to the page(s) of the SCP(s) you are wanting to use, scroll down to the bottom, and click on history. That'll pull up a list of revisions. Go until you find revision 0 and that's the author, barring rewrites. Check the discussion pages for something you feel may be a rewrite. Then, click on the author's name. This will bring up a box with their general profile info. Along the bottom there'll be a link that says something like "Send a Private Message" or "Private Message" click on that and its like sending an email. A notification will appear by your Wikidot profile in the upper right corner of your screen when the author replies. If the author does not reply, which may happen, contact a member of staff (whether they be Senior Staff, Mods, or Admins) and they will point you in the right way as to who to talk to from there. Be aware, if you PM an admin, it may take some of them awhile to respond. They are among the site's busiest people, both IRL and here. Not to say that some mods and SS members aren't, but some of our admins are very very busy. Best of luck!

As for who to speak about the concept in general, I am unsure what you mean. The individual SCPs or something broader?

Thank you, this will really help us. As for your question, I had meant the usage of the name SCP or "Secure. Contain. Protect." We weren't sure if we could use it or not. If we do an SCP haunted house we want to do it right. We want it to be something that the community can enjoy.

General concepts like the motto (Secure, Contain, Protect) or GOIs or the S/E/K classification system don't "belong" to any specific author and don't require permission from anyone in particular, so long as you're adhering to the Creative Commons license stuff I mentioned above.

As for contacting individual authors, making a good faith effort is polite, but again, you can use them regardless so long as you provide a link back to the original page somewhere that patrons can easily see it/have access to it.

I've just sent out all of our current usage requests to the individual authors involved. Hopefully they consent and we can truly begin working.
