SCP Board Game - Help wanted!

Escape from Site 19 is an SCP Board Game that had been in development from May 2013. It is suitable for 3 to 5 players, recommended ages 18 and up.

It is an Extreme RPG board game where the players have to perform some quite unusual tasks - think a more exciting game of "Activity" or Jumanji - from the movie.

The main theme of the game is a catastrophical containment breach on Site 19. The players’ characters represent characters from the SCP Universe (Foundation and GOI alike), escaping from Site 19 or fulfilling their own agenda, dealing with the dangers of escaped SCP objects.

The goal of the game is to escape from the site, completing various game and real-life tasks tied to particular SCPs, and defeat one of the SCP-0001s at the end of the game, randomly chosen at the beginning.

I won't go into an elaborate rules explanation as they are still a subject to the betatesting, but that's the gist of it! There are over 350+ SCP objects included in-game.

uh, I believe that I have the recommended "lurking" experience that you are speaking of, and I do know how people would react to certain aspects of games, so I MIGHT be a good grunt worker if you need one.

Ellow I'd like to help with the board game (if it hasn't already been released). I'm good at observations so id thought I'd help spotting contradictions and exploits in the rules and the such also tip:color can subcontiosly effect anyone ,for instince the color red is linked to blood,sex,and violence so put alot of red if you want them to rush in and completly miss somthing.the color blue however is related to safty,comfort,and a clear head this might help if you want them to overthink things.note:this trick does not work on some people for instince the colorblind won't be effected,also their are more if you can find the one related to fear or disgust you're golden.

Btw I'm not on often so yeah find me if you can but keep this in mind,

Color associations can depend on culture as well. Red is considered lucky by the Chinese, and it's a tradition to give out red envelopes during New Years and other celebrations.

for instince the colorblind won't be effected,

There are different kinds of colorblindness in humans, so this statement is a little weird.

I have seen some of your photo shoots on the Reddit and i do have a slight concern.

Its like this, i see you taking popular characters and changing elements of their appearance in ways that have me wondering if you are attempting to distinguish your depictions far enough away from the original art/photos so as to put your game into copyright, with a certain level of originality.

Not to own the characters themselves in any significant way, but perhaps just so your games original elements can be something other than the CC 3.0 that pretty much covers 99.999999% of everything SCP in the wiki and across the web.

I apologize if you have clarified this, one way or the other, someplace else.

So the question should be asked: Is your game going to be CC 3.0 and free for anyone to take and rework themselves after your games production/distribution?

Disclaimer: I am developing a game myself, and it will also contain original elements and it will be 100% CC 3.0 for anyone to do whatever they please with after me. Including building their own cards and expansion packs to add to my game.

Hello Gavriel

I’d like to address this concern of yours as it is sure a common issue among creators and game developers. As for our company, all of the artwork is be under CC 3.0 as usual, some of it, in fact, already used on other SCP websites. As for the SCP characters, we only add our versions of each SCP – but not for the sake of exclusivity, rather simply because there are vast possibilities of interpreting each SCP. Those are, of course, also under CC 3.0 as we, in no way, intend to pass for our own copyright with them.

Just wanted to give a small heads-up on the project, how are we doing so far.

Yesterday, we had a meeting with our team where we finally finished the Rules of the game. The rules are quite simple so far, nothing that would require reading several GM books before you'd even start playing. A good rule of thumb, however, is the recommended player count, which is best around 3-5. The recommendation for players being 18 and up also took place. It's not that younger players couldn't play it, but it's simply for the best experience of the game. Also, there are a few nasty "tasks" the player might have to complete during the game.

Also, I wanted to thank all the folks from the SCP wiki for their input so far. Namely, toadking07, Kyo13 (with help of Defrasa and Fladdledoo), anqxyr, Gears and TroyL so far. It's always great to join heads together, as we Czechs say, and figure something better out.

As for the content of the game, we already processed around 140 SCPs into the game. Our goal is around 300-400. We're working on the graphic design, while making the last tweaks to the overall look of the cards. And then, it's betatesting time!

EDIT: Just wanted to add Barbequedsteak, Reject and GottaGoFeast into the list of credited folks. My brain sometimes wanders off. Sorry guys!

The rules have surprisingly catched on and don't really need any bigger edits. Might publish them after the betatesting phase. As for the other stuff, we're only tweaking with the difficulty, the playability of the various SCPs adapted into the game, adding some object classes as need be (not inventing a new S/E/K, mind you; by classes I mean tags, like Chemical, Humane, Inhumane…) and so on. I'd like to credit LycanTherapy here, since he agreed with the use of his SCP symbols. Thanks, man.

Got about 160 SCPs ready for the game already out of the 350 SCP goal.The adapted SCPs range from less known ones with a few upvotes ( 1092, 1094) to some of the well known ones (173, 231, 012) , both from the first and second series, and so far almost all 001 proposals had been adapted to the game too. We're going to betatest soon and see how it turns out.

Right now, we are looking for artists with experience in drawing and digital drawing for the card pictures. There will be pictorial representations of every SCP used and we'd like to refrain from using the pictures already on scp-wiki.

I'm by no means an expert in photoshop but I have done my fair share of drawings and would be able to add some cool effects to any drawings that you like. I am currently experimenting with a ghost like text for another project of mine.

Just curious if you would like to post a list of the SCP's you've introduced into the boardgame. I have a few suggestions but I wanted to make sure that anything I suggest hasn't already be done before. Anyway just a thought. I love the idea of what you're doing and I also have played D&D a few times and one of my old mates is a DM so if you're interested into the story part of things I'd love to take part in it :D

Will you or how would you deal with unpredictable SCPs? Like the thing that has the fine, coarse, and 1:1 settings who's name/number I forget.

Hey there,

well, every SCP, in a way, is unpredictable. But as much as I can reveal, every SCP in the Board Game has an unique task that the player character needs to do in the game. I'll publish the complete rules after we move a bit more forward with the work and thus I'm sorry I need to be scarce on the details (adding some finishing touch here and there and we don't want to publish something done halfway)

It's a roll6 game actually, if the name is issued by the type of dice used. :)

In my mind, D&D= d20, d12, d8, d6, d4, and percintile dice/d10- & d10.
Also, Roll20 is a tabletop roleplaying+skype/text-chat thing. It has dice-rolling, an editable gamespace (hexgrid or otherwise), and it's free.

Ah, yep. Thanks for the clarification, as the DnD we play here in Czech rep. is a bit different than the American versions (Dračí doupě x Dungeons and Dragons) and I got confused.

I believe the Roll20 mechanics could work very well for this game with a webcam and skype. And, of course, players willing to take it seriously like your usual serious DnD game (I can also imagine it being a lot of fun with a player base willing to take a joke).

It started as a board game for our group, yes, but then we decided to take a different approach - we'd like to have the game be available for anybody interested to try it out. Since the game had sort of grown quite large and complex, we want our work to pay off for more people than like the 5 of us.

As for publishing - selling in stores - probably naaah.
As for publishing - having it available for download+voluntary donation to pay for the expenses on the game - yup.

Have you thought about Kickstarter maybe for publishing? Once you've got it refined to the point you're ready to make the product, anyway. You may not want to do it right away since you're still working on getting all the SCPs you want in the game and everything, but it (or some other crowd funding site) might be a good thing to look into for mass producing if there's enough interest.

Wait a sec.. Isn't 076 supposed to be designated its own place?
According to its document,

Containment Area 25b is to be located 200 m below sea level, tunneled out of solid bedrock in a seismologically stable area. Sole access to the containment facility is to be through a vertical elevator shaft separated every fifty (50) meters with a reinforced blast door, constructed of 20 cm thick titanium shielding. Elevator shaft shall be flooded with seawater when not in use.

It's ok, I believe this fact about the game might confuse some more people, too. I believe there are only a few SCPs total on Site 19, so limiting the game to them would seriously hinder the availability of SCPs ingame. Still, Site 19 is one of the most canonical sites and "the most appropriate place to be escaping from" Foundation game-wise.
