Ok, first idea off the pile: Humanity Simulator.
The item is a large computer with multiple attachments, consisting of a small monitor, a standard QWERTY keyboard, and ####-1. The item contains a single large program, approximately 1 petabyte in size. This program, upon being run, appears to be a copy of the game 'Minecraft' with multiple community-made mods. Upon being played, the user is presented with a nontypical game option; simulation. This option allows the user to specify an amount of people, and alter the physical, mental, and psychological aspects of individuals, where individuals appear in the game world, and their opinion of other individuals. Upon hitting 'Start' the game loads all individuals into the world and runs a simulation of their lives. Individuals display multiple abilities not possible in a standard game, such as injury to specific body parts, and copulation, which results in a new individual with randomized personality traits appearing afterwards. ####-1 is a device resembling a camera, which, upon 'photographing' a person (a process that takes approximately five minutes) uploads that persons physical, mental, and psychological aspects into the computer. That person can then be selected to be inserted into an already running simulation, or a new one.
I know this sounds a little weaksause, but the idea of it creeps me out a little because it would reveal both the true nature of a person, or humans in general. If you (or a random person) were dropped into the wild, what would you do? How would you behave? What would happen if you came across another person, after days, weeks, months, or years of isolation? Would you help others, create societies, or become a roving bandit? THAT is why it scares me, and think it could be interesting.
