Author's Notes

Many thanks to Drewbear, who gave me a key idea during the initial stages of the draft. Further thanks to Scantron, Djoric, DrMann, Jekeled, Eric_H (naming credit!), thedeadlymoose, MisterFlames, Rumetzen, and Silberescher who all gave me feedback and suggestions during the later stages.

Totally belated edit: Thanks to Scantron for photoshopping the original picture to make it look nicer. For the record, the picture was taken by me with my cell phone, at my university.

This took awhile to write, admittedly. Yes, there are references to Greek Mythology.

Potential spoilers

Psyche = soul = Ancient Greek, "butterfly"

The river shore mentioned isn't one found on earth.

I actually like the article without the clear association with the Greek underworld. A tree that uses a psychic vector to spread its "seeds" is unexpected and quirky enough for me to instantly love it, and after that the references to the Classical underworld seemed tacked-on and less interesting. It's possible that I might be missing something because of my merely passing familiarity with Greek mythology.

Also, a nitpicky question. Why did they attack the plant with herbicides? It seems like axes or fire would be a lot faster and more decisive. If I were dealing with an out-of-control plant, I think I'd rather have a chainsaw or a gallon of gasoline on hand than a spray bottle of Roundup. It didn't affect my appreciation of the article at all, it's just something that made me go "huh?"

I still liked it a lot, +1.

Actually, the people I showed the article to found it rather bland with just the vector for seed spreading. Could be personal taste, though.

Also, the butterflies themselves are not exactly seeds. Perhaps check the collapsible in my first post?

It was inside a Foundation greenhouse? Edit: Also, on the off chance that one of the butterflies popped up, I'm not sure you'd want to fall asleep holding a chainsaw.

I'm sure it is. If they needed the extra stuff to find the article interesting, and I found the article interesting despite not liking that bit quite as much, then I think the article as it stands is striking the proper balance. Well, maybe I'd like it more if there were some ambiguity (so that in my personal headcanon I could pretend that the butterflies were psychic seeds that had nothing to do with the underworld except maybe as a historical inspiration for some myths), but the article as it stands is making people happy, so kudos.

I saw this one on your sandbox and I liked it, but now you added something really intriguing and the result is that I'm so happy to read it (despite the severe sleep deprivation I'm suffering while writing this).

Yes, but not quite like this. This is shorter, safer, simpler, and is quite a pleasant read. The connection to Greek mythology was particularly impressive. +1

I've studied a lot of Greek mythology (does God of War count?) but I still didn't make the connection when I read this. However, it is an interesting and well-written idea even if it what it is wasn't immediately obvious to me. +1

My knowledge of ancient Greek myth is a bit patchy but I distinctly recall the dead transforming into butterflies when they enter the underworld and drink the water there (along with losing their living memories). The audio log allowed me to put 2 and 2 together, so I commend the creator for that.

I am going to have to look for that kind of story, because I love Greek mythology and I've never heard of that. All I know if that they place coins on the eyes of the deceased to pay for the ride from the ferryman Charon across the river Styx into Hades.

I like it. It stays somewhat subtle while still making the connection, and while it's simple, it manages to remain interesting.
