I think that "vas" was intentional, as the scientist in this story, Al, seems to be Albert Einstein. That the "v" would be to show his accent, and be a bit of a giveaway as to his identity. It wasn't until I read your change from the original "vas" to "was" that I pieced it together.

Edit: Reverted change to original "vas" to preserve author intent.
