I am under the distinct impression that these quotes were essentially a poor excuse to try and break tone. They can be fixed, simply by removing them.

You don't need this part at all, especially the quotes around delicious.

…You can't just call it food? I mean… they're eating it and believing they're eating food. Plain and simple, not sure why one can't just replace "foodstuff" with "food" and be done with it. Maybe I just dont' understand such things.
The nature of these delusions are variable in nature, although a common theme in them is that the subject is becoming 'enlightened' or 'ascending'

Overall, I'm generally unimpressed with the effect. It just seems weird for the sake of weirdness, which I guess nothing is wrong with that, but it's not compelling in any way to me.
