I really like this, although as mentioned on IRC I think the virus/self-replication angle has been done quite a bit before. It plays well on squeamishness associated with earbud use - I think the decision to move away from pure eye scream to more general body horror was a good one and it leaves enough questions in the user's mind about the purpose of the earbuds. In particular, I note the dB threshold means the secondary effect will mostly manifest when the user is in a crowded area with lots of other people who might pick up a pair of earbuds skittering over the floor…
This is put together well enough, but it doesn't really do much for me. No vote from me.
Pretty classic-feeling and squicky. I like it.

It's a nice standalone piece, but it really doesn't seem like a factory item.
What about it doesn't seem like factory?
Whether you like it or not, history is on our side. We will bury you!
I have the same issue; Factory products are, well, products. I don't recall a single one being what is effectively a self-replicating parasitoid that invariably kills its host.
Edit: I would be perfectly fine with this if it did not have the Factory link. As it is, I have to downvote it.
Seconding Mac here. Factory items always have some aspect that make you WANT to use them. They do something really cool, that either can be twisted by the user (like the monkeys) or exacts some price (like the porn.)
I would upvote this if it weren't a Factory item.

I think this could still work as a Factory item if it were tweaked somewhat. Perhaps they're high-quality audiophile earbuds that genuinely create the best musical fidelity possible, but they begin to incorporate themselves more into the body with each use and not using them causes worse and worse withdrawl complications until the user basically has to either rock out 24/7 or die?
Just a thought.
I'll likely up vote, but a data expunged in the effects in one's body would force the reader to use their imagination a little bit. Still, it's pretty good.
Man, this is not a good advice. This is the kind of articles where the person who is reading it needs to know as much as possible about the skip's behavior. Also, [DATA EXPUNGED] only works well with skips that people doesn't need (or need to avoid) any kind of sensitive knowledge that would breach containment if it's spreaded.
Hi, I'm agent Deep, and I need to know how does exactly a parasitoid earbuds work.
Hi, I‘m agent Sanders, and I think you don’t need to know about [DATA EXPUNGED] because then it grows and starts to kill everything.
That was the best summing up of when to use redaction that I have ever seen.
E. As for the article, I really like it.
