Damn those ears are big. Anyway, posted it in chat, and people said they liked, so here goes nothing. I sincerely hope you all enjoy.
Other than being a fox, this seems incredibly similar to SCP-367, right down to the exponential growth.
Giving bearhugs to the unsuspecting since 1872.
I'm not seeing a resemblance, outside of the high birth-rate.
High birth rate, can consume massive amounts of material, cute animal that's really made of something else ("unicellular" amoeba-esque thing vs fungus).
Giving bearhugs to the unsuspecting since 1872.
High-birth rate: SCP-1294 reproduces via infecting foxes, causing them to essentially give birth to fungal trees, while SCP-367 reproduces via mitosis.
Can consume massive amounts of material: SCP-1294 can only eat meat in this way, which is a VERY rare event which can pretty much only happen if it encounters a beached blue whale… in the Sahara. SCP-367 can eat everything, which plays more into its file.
Something that is something else: Yes, but that’s like, an eighth of every animal SCP ever made. If you’re talking about it being the same thing, I could point you to several SCPs that resemble cute animals.
So it's fox fungus? Is this the only known fungus out there? Is there no mtf out there looking for more instances of fungi to prevent a wide spread breeding? What type of euphoria do human subjects encounter when around the fungus? It's too much cute but deadly for me. This seems like something a a furry scientist would keep around for too long and die from exposure. It doesn't resonate for me.
The possibility of offspring are highly likely due to its high birth rate. Any reports of abnormally large foxes and/or fungi in the area should be brought to the site's designated head researcher for investigation.
Subjects… behave in a similar manner to those under the influence of a psychedelic hallucinogen.
Edit: although, if it isn't your bag of course, there's little I could do about that.
The effects, i got that part now. Reread it and noticed it. I'd still figure that since this is going to be considered keter that an mtf be associated with it and in the containment procedures. It can also not be my cup of tea, but having a threat like this be along the lines of, 'oh hey yea let us know if you hear about any more…' That just seems lacking thus my downvote.
I'm confused by your initial creation comment. What do you mean, it isn't yours?
There was a draft already in place and rather than overwrite it, he turned it into the first version for posterity/use by the original author, THEN wrote his own on top.
Giving bearhugs to the unsuspecting since 1872.
It's very tempting to +1 just based on the adorable picture, but will resist until I read it.
e: Okay, read it, liked it, have nitpicks.
I'm not entirely sure, but I think the "SCP" part of the title refers to the specific orders followed to maintain containment. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Also why would the MTF take the cover of poachers? They can administer amnesiacs if people see them kill one of the little guys. Maybe "Safaris, Cameras, and Photos," a Tourist trap that sells, well, safaris, cameras and photos? something like that maybe, because poachers really aren't the best cover.
Hmm. Regarding the containment proceedures, pretty much yes. They state what box they need to be in, and what people need to do. Regarding the poachers, they are fairly common in the saharra. Although I find it kinda sad, fennec foxes actually have pretty valuable fur. Seeing men hauling them into a truck isn't that much of a big deal out there.
SCP-1294 then proceeded to mate with the subject once unconscious.
The syntax here is a bit sloppy. I mean, it's obvious that "once unconscious" refers to the unfortunate D-Class, but since SCP-1294 is the grammatical subject, the sentence doesn't read very well.
Otherwise, this is creepy and adorable as all hell. +1
I'm not sold on the Keter classification here. Theoretically, if all instances are male and the female is killed upon giving birth, there is a negative birth rate, so they might kill off all those foxes, but there is a finite possibility of instances if they do that. And they seem pretty easy to kill.
I like the idea, but I'm no vote for now.
I squeed. Anyways:
If left exposed for longer than approximately two minutes, subjects will enter a consistently increasing state of euphoria
If exposed to SCP-1294 for longer than five minutes, subjects will enter a state of euphoria
You said the same thing twice within sentences of each other. It sounds clumsy. Especially if you said the same thing twice within sentences of each other.
and is capable of processing 190 metric tons of food in one week.
Is the Foundation even rationally able to give this thing 190 tonnes of food in one week? That could feed a small country.
and did not appear to be affected by the toxious environment.
Is toxious a word? 'Cause I don't think it's a word.
Subject experiences an epileptic shock
Epileptic seizure would be more appropriate. I'd also like to note that the description in the test log about the reproduction process is muddy and uncertain.
This thing doesn't feel like Keter to me. If worse comes to worst, all fennec foxes become walking MDMA scratch-n-sniffs.
Fixed mainly. Thanks for that. I'll take a look at the test logs when I get home. I was thinking that the foundation would either introduce an animal big enough to it (like a blue whale), or it would use a regenerative SCP to make infinite SCP burgers.
There's nothing here that seems to merit Keter classification, especially if it can only mate with other foxes of the same species.
It's not badly written as whole, but the fungus children trope is just a bit dull (and I've seen it done better in Mushishi). I would've liked to see some more interesting experiments. How does this euphoria affect the brain, what drug or substance is it comparable to (not all psychedelic substances are created equal)? How do people behave under the influence, and what evolutionary purpose does that serve for the anomaly? What on earth does it look like when it grows all over a human/prey— why does it have a stomach (and lungs—in fact, why does it have mammalian internal structure at all)?
Also
under the guise of local poachers
just seems a bit odd. "Local" poachers? As in poachers everyone knows? Why so specific? And from the instructions, I can't help but imagine these guys running around the Sahara torching fennec foxes.
