I am Dexanote, an Administrator. Hi.
New threads regarding recent drama will be locked and forwarded to this one. We have had an absolute ton of threads and discussion that goes over and over the same points, and at this point it adds little to nothing new to conversation and is becoming spammy.
The TLDR of the past week is that we have had a load of serious internet drama related to Pride Month, targeting the SCP Foundation. We’ve survived and are still learning from the events that occurred during this past time as a staff team.
Here are some basic points, as a sort of general FAQ of questions I’ve seen come up multiple times during the past week:
- Staff members made mistakes, in no small part due to being absolutely overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of people commenting and trolling various media branches. This is an explanation, and not an excuse.
- We owned up to the mistakes, and are not sweeping them under the rug. Staff have stepped down and various teams are being grown and reinforced with more members to share the load.
- The SCP Foundation creative writing wiki is officially pro-LGBT, and has been for over half of its existence.
- SCPs and tales do not require minorities to exist, and will not be judged harshly if they contain no minorities. We would like to emphasize that good fiction is the goal, which includes realistic, interesting characters.
For those who have not seen it yet, below is an official statement from our Internet Outreach (aka Social Media and Platforms) moderative team. Most of it directly is concerned with our Facebook, Reddit, and Twitter branches, but is still good to have here here:
During the chaotic reaction to the SCP wiki and our associated social media logo changes for Pride Month, a number of users began trolling our platforms in ways that required staff intervention. In the endeavor to remove toxicity, several of the users and staff members who run or moderate our social media platforms overstepped their authority in disciplining several accounts which were not actually trolling and had legitimate concerns or criticisms of the change.
We apologize for mistaking those accounts for trolls, and for overreaching with our moderation in the past few days and earlier. Staffing changes have occurred because of these mistakes, including the removal of disciplinary positions from users and staff deemed overreaching, and we are working on ensuring this will not happen again. We hope you can understand that, in the event of a large number of responses, people can make mistakes. We also hope you can appreciate that we are trying to make amends.
If you feel you have been unfairly banned please send a modmail.
We would like to reaffirm our support of the LGBT community and state that, while not liking the flag is not an offense in itself, bigotry and homophobia will remain not tolerated on the wiki or our social media accounts. We intend to provide a welcoming and creatively permissive writing environment for everyone.
Finally, happy pride month, from the SCP wiki Internet Outreach team.
All questions regarding this event will be answered here, and any other threads locked and redirected to this one.
Additionally, threads specifically highlighting the demographics of their posters as part of an opinion to the past events, while offering little else in the form of content, will also be diverted here. We would like to emphasize that we welcome the representation of all minorities.
I should reiterate: We are an entirely unpaid and smallish group of hobbyists and volunteers, trying to make this site the best it can possibly be out of the love of the world and the people we know here. We cannot take everybody’s concerns into account, whether it be immersion or the representation or celebration of any group.
The SCP Wiki staff may potential celebrate different groups in the future; these decisions will be announced with greater clarity in the future to assure a unified position of all staff teams regarding the subject.
