….this may be my favorite entry in the contest. Outstanding work, Fantem. You've improved bigtime.
I hate that this is presented as a monologue. People do not use terms like "thrice-damned" in anything other than stories.
It's well written enough that I can't downvote, but the weird phrasing that sounds nothing like an actual human being would use, prevents me from upvoting.
Really? I use that term all the time.

Well yeah, but… that's almost kinda the point. Without trying to giving it away for everyone else, the overall tone of the narrator is typical of those stiff upper lip, British military types. That, or those people who go on safaris, and wear those silly hats.1
You're right that not many people talk like this, but the scarce part of the population who do are pretty common for this job.
…well… I guess it's possible that it could be him, if you really wanted it to, but that wasn't what I had in mind when writing. Although they both share the same tone in voice I was going for. The thing is that he works for MC&D, not SCP. Minor, but whatever.
I like this depiction of MC&D, but ad Gaffney points out, I'm not in love with some if the writing. I also don't fully understand; did they all run themselves, one at a time, through 914 on coarse? Wouldn't they, um, stop after the first horrific mutilation? Also, the picture doesn't terribly work for me; it looks very photoshopped, and I don't know why they wouldn't use a picture similar to or just like the current picture of 914.
No vote for now.
My interpretation was they tried to use it to kill some heathen/anomalous beast they believed to be against their god, accidentally improved it or caused some explosion that stripped their skin that was facing the direction at the time.
I don't know why they wouldn't use a picture similar to or just like the current picture of 914.
Presumably because it wouldn't look classy enough for MC&D. I could see them ripping the faceplate off of the original controls just to replace it with brushed steel because it looks better.
This. It seemed obvious to me that in this case MC&D did their best to spruce up 914's appearance for potential customers.
I find it disturbing that this has a warranty. what can you trade for 386 Million dollars? or do they have the capability to fix the object if it breaks. Am I reading too much into this?
Well, keep in mind, 386,000,000 is just the minimum bid. I'd expect the price to shoot up to, say, 700,000,000 or so. I'd also imagine that you'd just get a refund if you ended up breaking it in a way that doesn't void the warranty… unless they can actually fix it; in which case, they fix it.
Why would MC&D sell 914, when they could just use it to make an almost unlimited amount of other things to sell?
