This was originally conceived by Nameless101 does not match any existing user name who had to drop out before posting. I rewrote it for them and this was the result. I will try asking on IRC as well, but if staff could edit this to reflect Nameless101 does not match any existing user name as OP I'd be very grateful. Done, thank you Tuomey
Nice to see other AWCY proposals adopting the response format. Nice work.
Seeing as how you upvoted as well, I'm far less nervous about the similarities to A Still Life. I liked it, so I used the format. Imitation is the sincerest form and all that. That's the kind of AWCY? that I believe in.
It's nice to know that something I did is making small waves in the format. I'm also a big fan of upcoming anartists not being as cocksure and lofty as their mentors or counterparts. They just want to express themselves.
Okay, I did not like the last AWCY proposal with responses, but I love this one. It also makes me like this scenario a little more. Just this dumb kid who has no idea what the fuck he's doing, accidentally spreading a meme that makes people unable to communicate because he's bad at taking criticism (and the criticism of the Critic's first response was quite reasonable!) and then lucking into something successful because artists are pretentious. I'm also pretentious amazed.
Yeah and because of this, KTS 6024 re-emerged and made it hell for the goc
"You used to dream of old Earth, didn't you? Bathed in gold and solemn blue. I intend to reclaim it now, from the spores, and the ruin. It came to me like a proverb: fight poison with poison." - Ballas
"The greatest warriors in the world. The reason they fought lost to the ages, yet here they are, searching for a sign of peace." - Apollyon
I feel that the best AWCY? formats have been character pieces that look at the creative process in some capacity. I'm really happy to see more works going in that direction (and, as always, less lolrandom/murderhappy anart is great.)
As an aside - it's worth noting that 4'33" already exists as an SCP: SCP-1433 (and AWCY, no less). I was surprised when the final crosslink went to the Wikipedia page, but changing to the skip might change the meaning of that line.
can I get some nice "no signatures on my forum"
sigma-9 css machine broke
understandable have a nice day
I'm with Hannah_AI: Zoltan makes this article work. He starts out as one of the people AWCY?1 looks down on as "not cool enough"- someone who has mistaken effect for meaning and thinks art that literally does something to people is as good as art that provokes people to have thoughts or feelings or react on their own. He wants to make something anomalous because it will be easier than conveying a message.
But as the Critic encourages him to take a good look at himself and what he wants to do, he stumbles across something sincere and meaningful that he can communicate: his feelings of inadequacy. "I'm trying to cover things up but doing a bad job of it"- who hasn't felt this way at some point in their life?
And then he turns those feelings into a piece that destroys criticism, and destroys art, and destroys the conveyance of meaning, and destroys civilization. A billion times worse than his initial proposal that would just kill people who looked at it. And the Critic approves, because they don't know what they're looking at, because it's white on white. And I feel sorry for him, despite the consequences, because it is really fucking cool. It takes a lot of courage to put a blank canvas on display and say "this is all I have." Note that Zoltan totally has the option to make a blank canvas that anomalously puts ideas in the viewer's head, too, and he doesn't take that shortcut either. His canvas traps ideas in your head. All your ideas. Forever. It just sucks that he had access to this particular meme. But then, if he didn't, would he have been willing to display that canvas at all?
This might just be one of my favorite AWCY proposals. in a way, it reminds me of the relationship i had with my college art professors. I was like zoltan, struggling to make something good and my teacher was the critic trying to help get better.
great proposal!!
I really like this one. I love the exchanges between Zoltan and the Critic: It does feel like a teacher-student relationship, and the core of the piece is really interesting as a concept too: That of searching for something, maybe approval, maybe worth, and not finding the way to express themselves; not finding anything to express.
So that's what Zoltan expresses.
The 4'33 is a really good addition to the piece: It helps land the piece as something grounded in reality, giving something that means absolutely nothing have more weight. That's art.
Anyhow, enough bs from me: I really like this proposal~
