Wow, I love this tale!
The thing that really helps it is the earnest way the parents act. It's one thing to have crazy, brainwashed people act stereotypically; it's another to have them act with their normal personalities geared towards something vile, and it's great to read.
I did think Gunnar's scene was a bit of a weird transition with the parenthesis and general silliness.
I don't know if you've read the rest of Game Day, but the organization that Gunnar et al are a part of are basically incredibly enthusiastic poseurs. The ones who weren't good enough to get into one of the big GOIs, if they even know about any aside from the Foundation. And Gunnar is definitely a deliberate stereotype of a fratboy-ish metalhead kinda dumb teenager, with attendant fantasies. Because if one of them found out that magic and myths were real, but didn't have a very good grasp on anything but the "sexy" parts, he would jump all over the chance to live out his fantasies.

I think that concept works, but it feels a bit out-of-place when the "civilian" characters act so normally. His humor just deflates the whole thing, at least until the focus shifts off him.
I haven't read the rest of Game Day, so I'll try and take a look at it.

really liked the tale (and the whole concept of "game day" so far) but will we ever see this plot come to a conclusion?

Also, we just got a call that the kumiho is coming to visit us.
I saw this line. Stopped and thought to myself for a moment. Then just smiled because I knew exactly who that was and I am a big fan of that one and whatever tales they are in.
Anyway other than that I think personally that this is written very well! Though I'll mildly agree with Boulder above in that the Gunnar character is a little… Strange and personally seems a little bit out of place almost. Unless that's what you're going for here.
Also when's the next/final part coming along?
