Written as a counterpoint to the "carnivorous tree/plant" trope. This was a lot of fun to write.

If the page you are on "looks fine," it is most likely (but not certainly) because its theme is overriding the SCP Wiki's default Sigma-10 theme. If you were to then navigate to a Sigma-10 page, such as the Front Page, it would likely appear broken.
Alternatively, if you know for sure that Sigma-10 is loading, the error is most likely mistakenly appearing because you switched the Sigma-10 theme to a different theme using the ThemePreviewer module or another similar feature. If this is the case, and you are the author of the page, add the following code to it to remove the warning:
[[module css]]
#top-bar .ios-cache-issue-notification {
display: none !important;
}
[[/module]]
I find the focus shifting over to SCP-███ on more than one occasion to be a little out of place. Sure it makes sense out-of-universe to explain some more about this non-existent SCP, but in-universe, pathogens not existing in ███ would be a fact placed into that article, and not this one.
Otherwise, I really like it. I'm not a botanist so I can't tell you whether or not your science is straight, but it's very well-executed counter to the carnivorous tree. Upvoted.
Hm… I'll go see what I can do about fixing that. The purpose was to note that SCP-824's lack of resistance to plant diseases was not an issue where it originally grew.
EDIT: i feex

It's briefly interesting, but the execution doesn't grab me.
Interesting. Not quite sure where you're going with the apple business. Were you intending there to be a particular reason why the trees treat apples like that? It just seems to be thrown in arbitrarily.
Still, I've upvoted it. The mental image of the roots grinding up the plant material is an oddly effective hook for me.
The idea with the apples is that the local population of the island took SCP-824 seeds/specimens back home and somehow changed them to assist them on their apple orchards, which either means that these people (or their grandparents) had a much better understanding of the trees than we do, or have some unusual way of creating changes in SCP-824 or other plants.
That sort of makes me want to write up the island or the locals as an SCP.

I like the science! However I'm not sure if "parallel evolution" was the proper term. I do believe that the proper term is "covergent evolution". Upvote.
Living the dream, or dreaming the life?
That is correct! I maek change!

I actually think it may be a mixture. I think it's likely that these trees evolved to imitate trees in our world for some reason. Perhaps their evolution started as convergent and then they evolved to blend in going further and further in the direction of resembling trees in our world.
Looking exactly like a tree in the area (China) outside the anomalous region seems like too much of a coincidence.
While it is odd that something this evolutionarily distant from most plants resembles our trees at all, it's only stated as being initially mistaken for being a member of the same family as Ginkgo biloba. Far from being exactly like it.

SCP-824 is a species of tree that exhibits significant mobility and consumes plant matter.
Does it consume things made out of plant matter, like pencils, paper and cotton cloth?
In 2011, several specimens of SCP-824 were found outside of containment on ████████████ Island, Japan. The behavior of these specimens has led to them being classified as a separate subspecies of SCP-824 (hereby SCP-824-1).
What exactly is the point of having two different types of the same tree? Why not just focus on either the ones from the extra-dimensional pocket or from the Japanese island?
Residents of ████████████ Island have not been cooperative with Foundation personnel, and generally react with suspicion to inquiries about or studies of SCP-824-1.
Why has the Foundation not simply seized these trees and administered amnesiacs?

Don't see why not.
What exactly is the point of having two different types of the same tree? Why not just focus on either the ones from the extra-dimensional pocket or from the Japanese island?
The part with the extradimensional ones is to sort of give them an origin story. The ones on the island are to show that they can somehow be turned into something suitable for agriculture.
Why has the Foundation not simply seized these trees and administered amnesiacs?
Because A) They've been living with these trees for a long time, and so long as they maintain secrecy operations, they don't have to disrupt normalcy for the people on the island. Much like the existence of anomalies would turn most of the world on its head, the lack of these trees would turn these people's lives over. And, B) They want to try and figure out how the trees got here and how they got turned from indiscriminate nomming machines to apple-picking trees.

Upon encountering a ripe apple, SCP-824-1 will gently grasp it and remove it from the branch, lowering the branch(es) now holding the apple to roughly 1.5 meters off the ground until it is removed.
despite your completely unrelated explanation for it earlier in the thread…the idea that these apples are being held just about the right height for a child to reach up and grab them is deliciously ominous
Well, I changed my mind and upvoted. This is a very 'soft' article, but really, it's not bad, and either I missed the extradimensional part or it wasn't there last night.
Also, I totally skipped the last note about the subspecies. I just can't see those apple-eating trees as anything but adorable.
What do you mean by "soft" article?
Also, I must admit that I'm amused that the apple-picking trees have gotten reactions ranging from "why is it even in the SCP?" to "deliciously ominous" to "adorable".

They're so helpful! It's cute!
And I say 'soft' because it's not overly anything. It's definitely anomalous, yes, but it's not dangerous or terribly cute or…
Okay, I actually have no idea why I said that, I'm sorry. It's almost as though I'm set against liking this one, but really, I think it works now.
Nah, it's fine. You're playing right into my evil plot to get people to discuss my SCPs.
muahahaha
