Pleased to Meat You

This is a historic moment. To my knowledge, this is the first direct Xmas gifter-giftee collab! More personally, it's my first exploration and my longest work ever (for now!)

Our story begins on a cold December morning. DarkStuff had been selected as my gift recipient for the Christmas Exchange. I was moved by the selflessness of his request and wrote him a little something. He was very happy to receive it but did note many areas that could be improved. So we agreed to a collab, that my idea and his skills could be combined to make this work what it was always destined to be.

Fast forward a few months. After both tying up loose ends, we sat down and hammered out this draft together. I had a blast working with Stuff for this, and I hope you have as much fun reading as we did writing.

Big thanks to 9Volt does not match any existing user name, Captain Kirby, and CadaverCommander for crit.

The Meaty of 11424

Wery already pretty much ‘splained how this came into existence, so I don’t have too much to say, other than I had a ton of fun writing this (and pumping out a ton of collabs recently in general). This was written more for the joy of writing it than the idea of having a phenomenal article. We had a blast writing what is essentially an entire exploration log of D-11424’s quips, and we hope that you have just about the same amount of fun reading it.

Also, hurray for the birth of the Lugwardians!

I'll be honest, this was interesting, but I got irritated by the exploration log about two-thirds of the way through. It just became this neverending cascade of "guy encounters even more inexplicable thing than the last inexplicable thing he encountered without ever losing his chill". It needs a trimming, if you ask me.

Maybe not inexplicable things, because I like inexplicable things, but the protag's writing gets remarkably grating after a while.

Agreeing with this, this feels like one of those newer action movies that tries to compress what would have been a long serial when I was a kid into one movie by removing anything that doesn't have explosions in it.

Seconding this, though I got irritated earlier than that. I think I'd be more on board with this one if there were more of a point than just a sequence of weird, loosely-connected things. The article's got this bizarre inter-dimensional trading post and these mysterious portals (how did one get into the Arctic ocean?), which I think would make a good core for an article but as it is I kept getting distracted and annoyed by 11424's relentless unflappability. I respect the weirdness, but not enough to upvote.

Nthing the above. I'm usually a huge sucker for explorations, but there really doesn't seem to be much to this aside from the protag stumbling through a series of inane events.

The goal when writing D-11424's character was to break the usual trend of D-class being scared shitless all the time. (In my headcanon, most D-class experience quite a few anomalies before dying or being rendered too anomalous for further SCP tests.)

We may have swung a bit too far in the other direction, but we love D-11424 too much to rewrite the entire thing.

The other thing I'll say is that everything in there is there for a reason; there is a point to all of it.

Oh man! This reads like a good fantasy novel and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My only problem is that this is from the perspective of the d-class and not HQ but is still through the eyes of HQ (if that makes sense).

Anyways, +1!

I love almost everything about this. Definite +1.

But the D-class's reactions threw me off. I could maybe imagine a gung-ho and slightly crazy adventurous MTF member being this cavalier and enthusiastic about a dangerous and surreal exploration mission. But it's hard to imagine a D-class being so. Especially if we're going with the standard, "D-class are death row inmates conscripted into slave labor by the foundation" backstory.

That's not really standard anymore. And I figure, not every test/exploration/incident kills mountains of D-class. Surely the Foundation would prefer to send someone somewhat experienced, who won't freak out at the first sign of an anomaly.

Yea, that might be the default for some, but it's far from the rule. There are examples of D-Class that are volunteers or demoted personnel, or sourced from elsewhere.

Even if you suscribe to the death row prisoner origin, there's still the fact that individuals won't react the same to any given situation, so having one that's able to keep a level head isn't completely far-fetched.

Honestly, it's somewhat refreshing to see someone, especially a D-class, adapt and thrive in an anomalous situation without dying by the end. But in this case, it goes on for too long, the situation seems pointless on the surface, and he's just so smug about it. So the base concept here could work, it just needs to be refocused and trimmed.
