I'm NOT Senior Staff, by the way, so take all this with a grain of salt:
It's more complicated, actually - he has to attribute the owner of the copyright.
My understanding, simply put::
#1 Anything you do or create can have works derived from it. You own it, but I can make works based off if it.
#2 The Foundation concept as a whole including the logo, is owned by all of us, but controlled by Senior Staff, which is chosen by the Administration Staff, so they really have final say. Since Gears is the Master Administrator, he is the absolute final word. Fortunately, he rules with a light touch.
#3 Any works derived from The Foundation are owned by their creators, but because of our Creative Commons license you can derive your own works from them. That DOESN'T mean you can put all of Bright's stories together in a book and sell it without his permission. He still owns them. Write your own.
#3a It's considered polite to ask before you write about a character, especially an avatar. Most authors will agree for story purposes posted here, but if you want to sell the work, it would be different.
#4 Abandoned works (or works where the author has disappeared) are considered to be owned by The Foundation, and are stewarded by the Administrators.
So, if you write a book based on The Foundation I can write the sequel, Yoric can write a completely conflicting prequel, Bright can mastermind a movie based on all three, Sorts can retcon it into a comicbook, and Volgun does the radio play.
So, Senior Staff - how much did I get wrong?
aaaand I replied to the wrong person. Whoops!
