After coming back from a long period of lurking, this is my first attempt at writing an SCP from scratch. I've been reading a lot about Mt. Everest lately and thought it would make a great stomping ground for an SCP, and this idea gradually came together in my mind.

As Everest survivor Lincoln Hall, who inspired the character of "L." in the interview log, passed away this past week, i'd like to dedicate this SCP to his memory and to all the men and women who have lost their lives on Everest in pursuit of glory.

So someone who comes under the effect of the SCP will struggle to retain eye contact, and will try to re-establish eye contact if it's broken?

This makes it sound like he became afraid of mountains because he remembered the encounter. Did the Foundation not dose him with amnesiacs?

That was my intent. L. was only able to because he was doggedly persistent about resisting it.

L. is based on the real-life Lincoln Hall, who did indeed survive over 24 hours near the summit in a sleeping bag. Two days might be pushing the limits of possibility, but not quite impossible.

I borrowed that line directly from the Wikipedia article on Hall. Cheerfully withdrawn.

He would indeed have been dosed, but like the real Hall retired because of the physical trauma he suffered.

The EXPUNGEMENT seemed to be a bit of a let down at first, not telling us anything about what happens after it reaches its victim; but on a second look it actually fits quite nicely. Also, I like SCPs which make me feel like I learned something.

This is one of those entries that makes me REALLY, REALLY want to know what's happening behind the DE's. In a good way. And while individual head-canon is always at play, I kinda want to know if you had a particular thing in mind for what exactly this thing does to people.

One of the things which bugs me a bit is the addition of photos in Mallory's camera. The Foundation didn't become aware of the monster until 1970 and yet apparently they seized Mallory's camera and reported it lost. Are they in the habit of routinely absconding with peoples' possession and suppressing all mention of them, or were they already suspecting something?

Mallory's corpse wasn't discovered until 1999, well after the Foundation would have become aware of the creature's existence. I guess I assumed that was well-known, but I'll add a line to clarify that.

As someone who also loves reading about Everest, I just wanted to tell you I think this is brilliant!

If it were possible to add -J logs to normal SCP articles, I'd love to see hand-to-hand combat between it and Anatoli Boukreev.

I imagine that if the creature were ever captured and interviewed, it would call Boukreev a worthy foe and mourn his death.
