Spawnwater!

I found a creepy picture that got my brain bubbling. The idea is called 'Spawnwater'; A type of liquid that when applied to human flesh animates the applied area into a worm-type-thing that peels away from the host. Not lethal, but quite injurious. it may call for a really gross picture of a dermal avulsion (provided i can find the bit on the wikisyntax page that tell you how to make pics hidden until clicking. it'll be gross.)

thoughts, SCPeoples?

Interesting. Would the liquid be a means of reproduction for the worm thing?

The spawnwater contacting human flesh is the only way the worms come about, so yes.

They take a while to 'form up' but end up like a large slick tubeworm-esque thing that in nature seem to just travel in pods and bottom-feed. They somehow create/spread spawnwater, converting it from normal water.

I need to find some physical reason that this isn't planet tubeworm by now though.

UPDATE: Just poking around and ran across some weird thing called "M-Water". go the the google and look at health and illness related websites with the term. There is so much and so little about it. I did not link directly because the sites looked… sketchy.

You could have the foundation discover it in an isolated water source like a desert oasis. People build villages around those, so they could be the first victims.

How would the worms affect a large body of water? What level of dilution would be necessary to avoid teh squickz?

they could convert a large body of fresh-water given the time and isolation. They can't affect ocean water, though. they have a general aversion to salt. you came at a great time, it's in my sandbox now.
