Alright, so it's been way too long, but I finally got around to writing another log for SCP-440. The first one dealt with the SCP-440-1 (the rocktopods), this one was the introduction to the Rock Snakes (SCP-440-2). I wanted to keep two things consistent in the piece, specifically:
- The sense that the entities in a 440-based enviroment aren't actively hostile (or friendly) to humanity. They simply exist, and reasonably act like any comparitive creature without human interference.
- D-classers not dying for any obligitory reasons. They only die if they do dumb (if understandable) things.
One of the more difficult things in the piece was the 'Beta Class' person in the story. For more information, I talked about it in this thread.
As I wrote the article, I realized it worked better if one of the 'characters' in it was a bit more knowledgeable about a 440 habitat. As I kept writing, the more the more experienced person made more sense: Jurrasic Park had its Muldoon1, after all. If a D-Class person turned out to be that sort of person, wouldn't they want to keep him around? Not staff, per se, but definately higher than D-Class.
I concede the 'Beta Class' designation is a bit clunky.
The last thing I'm a little concerned about is the amount of footnotes. I put them in so that the reader didn't have to go back to the main SCP-440 page to read about the creatures (or the earlier Log, in the case of describing dustbug colonies), but I could be convinced to remove them.
