Some of you might notice there is currently a donation bar on the left side of the screen. The reason for this is simple. We are attempting to make the monies to set up our own forums and such on our own site, so that we don't have to worry that, say, wikidot decides they don't like something we've done, and removes everything. So! Donate if you want to, we'll see what can be done.

What hosting solution are you looking at?
What functionality are you planning to implement? Is it going to be backing up content or replacing the wiki?
Who will be doing the actual technical and design work?
Hey, Mack, I was planning on doing the transfer either myself or with a small team. The new site will be a replacement for this wiki, with the current material being put on the new site and all new content channeled there instead.
I'm looking at my current hosting site, which offers 1500mb for storage space and 100gb for bandwidth, but their paid services go to unlimited storage space, bandwidth, and unlimited sub-domains. Their servers haven't been down as far as I can tell.
As for functionality, it'll be similar to what happens on the site. A method of submitting works will have to be finalized, but users will still be able to submit works and articles.
More to be added to this "list" as time moves on. This is what we've been discussing for now.
Have you given thought to what kind of CMS you guys would be using? Either modifying an existing solution or baking your own is going to take a while, even if you have more than one person on it.

I think people are interested in what they are asking to donate money to. Knowing where it's going and what will be done with it doesn't seem too out of line.
The senior staff is discussing such things. We'll figure it out.

I think there's a difference between asking what the money is going towards and getting into technical details about CMSs, specific hosting plans, storage requirements, etc.
Why not use a subdomain of scpfoundation.org? Do we still have access to that?

Will we still be working under Wikidot policy (Including the Creative Common License) or will we be able to change policy?
I meant to say, will there be any changes in policy that couldn't be made under wikidot hosting?
WikiDot lets you set any policy you like (the pull down lists a dozen Creative Common variants, the GNU one, "other" and "Standard Copyright" which it doesn't recommend).
The problem is since all these works were submitted under CC-ShareAlike3.0 (which we use). I don't think you can just change what an author posted under, but I have no idea the ramifications. I'm a tech, not a lawyer.
Mainly, that we wouldn't have to answer to wikidot, and would be completely in charge of our own stuff. Technically, Wikidot could step in at any point and delete whatever they feel like, without talking to Gears or any of the Admins, and we would have no real recourse. Although they've only done it once so far, that's still one time too many.

I think the big deal about moving is that we'd probably lose all the existing votes on stuff. There are other, better voting widgets around, but they're not going to be compatible with Wikidot's database of votes.

This may actually be a good thing. There are plenty of votes right now in various places that belong to deleted accounts. If unregistered users can't vote, it seems strange to have votes from users that are no longer registered. Also, those votes can't be changed if an article rewritten to warrant a better vote. There may be other cases I haven't thought of where this ghost votes could become problematic.

Voting, membership lists, article history, forum history, uploaded files, a sandbox, the auxiliary sites (which would probably be handled MUCH better), infrastructure, backups, site redundancy, disaster recovery, SEO, membership controls, actual bylaws and leadership controls by the membership, costs of setup, recurring costs, merchandising (which I'm for even if this doesn't happen as there are still wikidot annual fees), "Doing Business As", "Not For Profit" status, the IRS…
Yea, I'm rather glad I'll never have to worry about being in charge. This is a HUGE kettle of worms and an unending headache for those that volunteered to do it for free.
I did not mean to discount the other items you mentioned, but losing the votes from 1000+ articles is one of the bigger issues that a casual user of the site will definitely see and notice, after all the back-end and other administrative stuff is decided on and fixed.

Actually, I'd love a voting system that was flexible enough to remove votes from anonymous/deleted/banned accounts, might provide more statistical info, etc. WikiDot's development folk are kind of lacking in the fixes department.
I'd really like to see a 1-10 or 1-5 rating system replace the straight up/down votes…there was a discussion of this elsewhere and I remember there was some Senior Staff interest in doing this.

Pretty much what I was thinking.
I'd be more interested in knowing what someone's voting record was - Is Yoric REALLY most likely to downvote something? Are there those that only upvote? Who is it that ever bother to vote at all?
There might be a facility in some rating tools to see how a specific user has voted (and on what). The set of ratings is just a database; it's a question of how the tool lets you query it.

I'd imagine Senior Staff would set a minimum average rating standard, after a set amount of time and/or a set amount of votes. Something like "After 3 days and/or 15 votes, anything rated under 5 out of 10 is up for deletion, and anything rated below 7 should be edited and improved." It's a little more complicated than the current system, but you could decide how tough to be in terms of what stays and I think it would work.
I like the idea of distinguishing between "good enough to stay" and "really great" and conversely "almost good, and you could probably fix it up" and "just plain awful."
Anything could get a "1" from someone, just because sometimes someone really hates an article (or, an article most folks don't like could still get a "10" from someone who really likes it for some reason) so the standard should be on the average rating, not the number of top/bottom votes.

A case could be made for assigning more weight to votes cast by senior staff.
Seconding what Sorts says. There are some popular SCPs that senior staff just don't like.

The system we have now works fine, I think. You either upvote it if you like it, downvote it if you don't, or abstain/downvote if you're undecided. Simple, and keeps things pretty consistent.
You go to a 1-10 scale and things get a bit muddled. There is no guarantee, and in fact, it is highly unlikely that everyone would agree upon what value represents what. One and ten would obviously be terrible and fantastic respectively, but what about a five, or a seven? It's not hard to imagine two users with by and large the same opinion about an article with regards to quality voting differently simply because one thinks a five is unspectacular but passable and the other believes a seven means the same thing.
You're probably thinking, "So what?" The problem comes when an article's score is assessed to determine if it should be a candidate for deletion or not. There's almost certainly going to be a uniform, consistent way of assessing the score. If people's voting isn't consistent, though, the score won't be an accurate representation of the site's collective assessment of the article.
This is avoided entirely if we don't fix what isn't broken.

I remember the last time we did this, and it was…painful. then again, may hands make light work, and we sure as hell have a lot more hands now. We're exploring options still, looking in to site domains, hosting, and scripts and such for the actual migration. If we get to the point where we actually have a plan to set in motion, you'll all be notified, most likely via both the forum and front page. Nothing abrupt will happen, and everyone will have ample opportunity to weigh in and offer suggestions.
So…yeah.
We're planning a similar thing.
Only that it will not have a wiki engine - just an ad-free version of the classic and canon Foundation pages. Discussions, sandboxes and editing history will be left on Wikidot. We're slowly working on it, the address will be scpfoundation.net.
But in russian, right?

Why not scpfoundation.ru? Seems more fitting to me.
That's their equivalent of www.scp-wiki.net - it's already in use. (Their actual site is http://scp-ru.wikidot.com)
I'm going to suggest that whomever has charge of http://www.scp-foundation.com/ set the forwarding to http://www.scp-wiki.net - it just looks kinda tacky as it stands.
Little do you know that all those ad links are actually links to Foundation front organizations.
