Withered hearts and cruel tormented eyes

IT'S HERE. THE SEQUEL YOU ALL STOPPED WAITING FOR.

So yeah. After 9 months, A Farewell to Kings is finally here. The wait for part three will not be nearly as long.

Thanks to Taffeta, TyGently, Conwell, Ihp, and probably others for crit. Thanks also to Randomini for continuing to let me use Agent Green.

Up next: A wizard battle in an impossible museum.

(Also, the images are all made by me and are released under CC-BY-SA 3.0.)

Eyyyyy! Glad to see this is back in action.

Lots of imagery to love in this tale, from the street flooding with coffee, to the construct, to the thaumatological circle at the end.

Additionally, seeing Thorne use their magic was a refreshing change of pace from a lot of the more flashy evocation-style magic that has been used in other tales.

+1.

Heck yeah for continuation and also: UIU using thaumaturgy? I love you. I love you so much.

Though I have a bit of issue over Green being a bit clueless, wasn't he an ex-GOC?

GreenWolf 26 Oct 2017 09:19

Different Green, actually. According to Randomini, anyways.

Anyways, I wouldn't call this Green clueless, as much as I'd say he's out of his element and on the receiving end of some bad luck. Green might be an anart specialist, but Backdoor SoHo (and Three Portlands) doesn't necessarily operate on the same rules that he's used to. Foundation agents brush up against the edges of the paranormal world when it threatens normalcy, but UIU agents live in it. So of course Thorne is going to know more about thaumatology than Green, who's only real experience with it within the Foundation would likely be working with Navarro — and Navarro is a lot less theory-based than Thorne.

I really enjoyed this - it's brisk, and interested in details of how things work, and in relationships between people. All very good, and I look forward to the clock ticking down in the third instalment.

Different Green, actually. According to Randomini, anyways.

Oh dear, I didn't know that. In Figure and Ground, they're the same person - I even included a crosslink from SCP-2162 to "Angel of Red and White". Well, that's my headcanon and I'm sticking to it! I figure if this happens relatively shortly after Figure and Ground, and well before Cool War, it could explain Green's relative inexperience with anart.

GreenWolf 26 Oct 2017 11:28

Who even is Agent Green? The world may never know.

Honestly, it's not a huge deal if they're the same person or not. Even if this Green was ex-GOC, there's no specific reason why he would be familiar with thaumatology.

Also, this is intended to be after Cool War (since I imagine Cool War taking place in the previous decade), but honestly, the timeline is flexible there. This Green is supposed to be experienced with anart (hence his references to exploits, and why he was heading the Foundation task force in Permanent Waves), but less experienced with thaumatology (hence his curiosity of what Thorne is doing), and that's what I'm sticking too.

Which is why I love "no canon". I'm fine with this occurring after Cool War, but if people aren't, they can keep or discard details as they see fit. Maybe there was a different GOC Agent Green, but rumours in the Foundation conflated the two, and this Agent Green doesn't feel the need to dispel them!

Also, I meant to say thanks for linking to Figure and Ground. It's funny, I have recently been considering whether I would fold that tale back into SCP-2162 - if I do, I'll let you know so that the link can be updated.

Point of order regarding Green: The Green in Angel of Red and White and the Foundation Agent Green are two different people, but Foundation Green is ex-goc. A green agent is Gocspeak for someone who specializes in dealing with reality benders, and when foundation green defected he kept the moniker as a code name (same for agent tangerine; an orange agent is a low level reality bender working for the goc).

TLDR; they're both green agents but only one is Agent Green.

I always enjoy a good magic murder mystery, and this was no exception. I admit I don't like how the usually no-nonsense and competent Green was depicted as something of a whiny idiot here though.

As always, this rocks; Thorne is a very strong protagonist that, just like their mother, makes every tale so much more enjoyable with their appearance. Solid work.
