Right, so I've been asked to give an explanation for this page.

Basically, when trying to come up with my own SCP-001 proposal a while back, I read everyone else's. Didn't want to copy or steal accidentally, so I review and made myself some notes. And then I happened to think for a bit… "What if this one is right? How would that change things?" Which inevitably led me down a "Oh, holy shit" trail into this project. One story for each proposal, with each one going horribly awry in some way or imparting some of my personal thoughts/feelings on the object. This is my homage to you 001 authors. Excellent work, all of you. :)

Troy, were you the original author of the SCP entries referencing the black moon?
Forgive me for my ignorance if you were, I just always found that phrase striking (even if the actual SCPs weren't the greatest)

Interesting ammount of wordplay going on with the naming. Don't suppose you'll divulge the significance of the thaum- prefix?

From Wikipedia:

Thaumiel (twins of God) is the name of one of the Qliphoth in the Kabbalah, the shadow side of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. It is the shadow of the Sephirot Keter (the crown). While Keter is concerned with the unity of God, Thaumiel represents the dual contending forces, struggling, and it is represented by 2 giant heads with bat-like wings.

If I'm reading that correctly, Thaumiel is basically Anti-Keter.

I was on one of the foreign language wikis, reading tales with the help of Google Translate, and to make a long story short, I now see what you did there with the titles. Hah. I like it. Now I'm having fun trying to figure out what the titles might be if you did the other 001s (and while I'm at it, chalk me up for hoping you eventually will!)

I wonder if the titles for each tale has any significance for the SCP-001 proposal they're about. Of interest is that they're all Latin words.

• Clavis (The Gate Guardian): "key; lever or bar for tightening a screw press".
• Corvus (The Legacy): "crow".
• Cygnus (The Database): "swan; (figurative) a poet, especially one who sings".
• Lux (The Factory): "light".
• Pila (Sheaf of Papers): both "mortar" and "pillar; pier" (etymologically unrelated homophones).
• Rota (The Prototype): "wheel; (pars pro toto) a car, a chariot; (figuratively) the disc of the sun".
• Virr (The Spiral Path): Seems to be a misspelling of vir, meaning "male human, man; man (human); grown man; brave man, hero; husband; (in military contexts) footsoldier".
• Visium (The Foundation): Probably derived from visus — The action of looking; the power of sight; a vision, sight, apparition; appearance — by combining it with the suffix -ium.

Oh. Ooooooohhhhhh. Now I feel stupid for not noticing how, for example, Cygnus matched perfectly with Dr. Swann's name (I even wrote the meanings down in the above post!).

So… Where does this leave qntm, Djoric, Dmatix, Roget, djkaktus, and Kate McTiriss? I can't figure out appropiate Latin-based "codenames" for them.

Well, in the meantime, I've come up with my own Latin codenames just for convenience's sake.

• Quantus for qntm's proposal. Because, you know, "qntm" is obviously standing for "quantum", which is a "noun use of neuter form" of Latin quantus.
• Andreas for Djoric/Dmatix's collaborative proposal. Because Dmatix is the only one of the two with an actual personnel file rather than an ordinary author page, and he has the given name "Andrew".
• Rogatium for Roget's proposal. Because roget is an actual Latin word, derived from the verb rogō.
• Cactus for… well, djkaktus' proposal. Because his member page only gives "Kaktus" as his name (the rest are all just titles).
• Castium for Kate MCTiriss's proposal. Because one popular etymology for "Katharine" derives it from Greek katharos ("pure"), the Latin counterpart for which is castus.

What do you think?

Back when I was trying to come up with titles for the other 001s, my idea for kaktus's was "Surculus", which initially came from me Google-translating the word "plant" (hey, if Scantron can become "Visium"…), but I especially liked it because it looks/sounds kinda like "succulent", the type of plant that most cacti are. Double meaning, hey!

Just stumbled upon an interesting fact about the word "cactus". It's Latin, right? But it's not native to Latin, but rather a loanword from Ancient Greek kaktos, which at the time was used to refer to the cardoon, whose binomial name is Cynara cardunculus.

So… "Cynara", or "Cardunculus"?

If google translate isn't failing me, those both mean something along the lines of "Wrong". Honestly? I think that would fit MrWrong's Proposal for than anything.
