I don't really see the similarities either.
That being said, I'm not really getting this. I get that it's a (unique, in my mind) take on the basilisk, but it lacks any reason for one to be scared of it. I mean, they're giant reptiles that kill things and eat them. While it would be scary to actually see one of them, I'm not. I'm reading an article about them on my computer.
Now, if I had reason to think that I was never safe from them, or that they could get me at any moment, or if there were implications that there's something bigger going on here, that could work. As is, they resemble SCP-682 without the omnicidal misanthropy and the extradimensional-horror subtext.
EDIT: The inevitability of death, made imminent, is an element in many good scary things. See SCP-096, SCP-157, SCP-173, and SCP-198 for examples of what I'm talking about. Basically, if you come into contact with one of these (or, in 096's case, see four fucking pixels of its face), you are done for and there's nothing you can do about it. It's only a matter of time.
