So I just found SCP-3872 by DrMagnus, and it made me think of this old meme. I've heard it used before, but I never really knew where it came from. I assume it's from the early days, Series 1 era, but I would like to know its origins. Thanks.

Actually, I think it was a meme even then, and was referenced in that tale because of it's status as a site-specific meme.

Wasn't there for it, but from what I've seen and heard read, it's a riff of an old, bad SCP where "consult an alchemist" was part of the Containment Procedures.

Can someone else verify me and/or whap me with a rolled-up newspaper if I'm wrong?

I can verify and whap you with a rolled-up newspaper. It's from SCP-857-D, the last ever decommissioned SCP. And the wording is "check with an alchemist", not "consult an alchemist".
