I'm not sure why I like this SCP, but I do. I think it might be the idea of people accidentally spreading it.
I personally loved the "chain restaurant as a memetic virus" angle, especially since the word memetic doesn't even appear in the piece at all. I am so pleased at this that I could be bouncing happily in my chair if the rest of the piece wasn't so horrifyingly profane. *shudder*
It strikes the right balance of juuuuust almost barely referencing some sort of Easter/Communion sort of ritual while being balls-out unholy… but not too obvious to make it look like another tired RELIGION! metaphor. Incredibly subtle for a story about cannibalism.
I was speechless on my first read through. So props to Chubert on this one.
What sorts said. Upvoted. Unfortunately, your expungement is a bit clumsy; you might want to work on that.
I don't like the expungements. They feel less 'creepy' more 'I didn't want to take the time to figure something out for these.'
Admin, SCP Wiki
"Every half-hour, they will wash their hands periodically" is either redundant, or the oddest reference to the Periodic Table I've seen in some time.
I like this one a lot. Still, I would like to know how exactly group B members feel later on. Do they remember consuming flesh, and if so do they regret it?
Well, it says they behave normally, which would seem to imply they aren't necessarily aware of their actions. Then again, it could stand to be more explicit.
Yeah, I read that, but I feel like that either implies that A) they have no memory of the event or B) they are okay with what they did (because how else could you behave normally after eating people?), except that being okay with it refutes the whole "normal" thing.
After the completion of all activity, members of Group B will behave normally. Most members have a somewhat inaccurate recollection of the evening's events.
You know, when you think about it, that's kind of terrifying.
The buffet was EXCELLENT loved the pork skewers would visit again five stars * * * * *
See, there's that guy, and then there's the guy who refuses to talk about that night or that restaurant for the rest of his life.
But when he thinks about it, he smiles a little, knowing smile.
that's because he'll never have to take his mother-in-law out to dinner ever again
Just a little thing that nagged me on my way through the article:
"Starting around 1600 to 1830 hours, any customers who had previously consumed any of SCP-785-2's beef or bread during the day, designated Group A, will be stabbed twelve times by the staff of SCP-785-1."
Isn't 785-1 the name of the restaurant? So, are the employees working for the restaurant or the name of it?
Nice, Chu. You've got a real winner here. I do think the overall structure of the article could be sharpened up still, although the number of +votes you have clearly shows that it's darn good as it stands. I know the 'more is better' philosophy isn't always a good one, but I think this one could really shine with an "example incident" of one of the Spring Specials, or perhaps an interview or description of interviews with some of the Group B's so that we have a better idea how their memories are affected. I had some more ideas when I first read it, but they've faded into the mist of my brain now…
Hm, when I first read this, I thought it was just some random OOH SCARY RANDOM MEMETIC VIRUS thing, but I read it again and suddenly freaked out. The idea of a couple of zoned-out people with bronze spears ambushing and butchering customers for a "Spring Special" did it for me. Upvoted.
awesome article. very disturbing.
one point i want to make though….
"Left unchecked, the popularity of SCP-785-2 will grow unusually quickly. Within nine months, at least fourteen other additional instances of SCP-785-2 will be created. The spread of SCP-785-2 is not limited to its home city: when first discovered, ██ instances of SCP-785-2 were found in three separate cities."
at LEAST 14 instances if left unchecked….
"any customers who had previously consumed any of SCP-785-2's beef or bread during the day".
by "any" does it mean any customers who ate bread or beef during THAT day will get killed? or does it mean any customers who did so in the entire existence of that instance of 785-2 will come in to be slaughtered?
if it's the former, then as a very popular restaurant you're still probably looking at at least 30 customers per instance. so say about 400 people slaughtered every spring special…
if it's the latter, then you're probably looking at several thousand, if left unchecked
never is it possible to truly contain it because it's an idea rather than an object. preventing the slaughter requires constant attention worldwide. it's a pretty serious threat to human life in any area it starts to affect. it requires extensive, intensive, and expensive monitoring. if a breach happens it's a large and time consuming undertaking to contain the situation.
seeing how many "keter" objects have been relabeled to "safe" in the past due to the threat levels being primarily based around the difficulty in containing them rather than how much damage theyre capable of doing, i feel i must protest…
shouldnt this be keter rather than euclid?
"Keter objects fall into one of two categories: those that are of immense strategic value once controlled, or those that have been deemed impossible to destroy due to the nature of the artifact."
and
"Keter class objects are always inherently dangerous, despite the best containment procedures possible: the threat level may range from global armageddon to simply killing everything around it. A hand grenade with the pin removed may be considered Keter: a single mistake will cause casualties."
i really feel this meets all criteria and suggest it be upgraded.
I agree. This SCP is actively malevolent, kills multiple people, and cannot be fully contained. By no standard is this anything less than Keter.
Not exactly malevolent, as it doesn't actively will harm to humans.
It's true that, by definition, "malevolent" means "bearing ill will", and a non-sapient idea (or restaurant) can't very well have any kind of will. I'd argue that in the Keter definition, though, "malevolent" is slightly metaphorical and could easily be replaced with "actively dangerous". Nonsapient objects that nonetheless actively seek to do harm fit the sense of the thing. Think of a heat-seeking missile. It is in no way sapient, or even sentient, but once it's fired it takes direct action to do harm.
In short, yes, this is in some sense actively malevolent and definitely Keter. Chubert, may I edit the class to reflect that?
Two things:
1.) "Starting around 1600 to 1830 hours" - Shouldn't it be "Starting between 1600 and 1830"? There isn't an estimate in there. It is a very concrete time frame for the event to start.
2.) What happens to people who walk into the restaurant during the event? Does the employees (Group B?) ignore them? Do they attempt to attack and eat them as well?
Overall, you have my up vote. Just wanted to clarify those two things.
