Are either of them any good, or should I trash them and go back to the drawing board?
I definitely like the locket, though I would add in something regarding making multiple measurements. After all, even if there's a random error added to a measurement, with a large enough number of measurements, one would expect them to average out to something near correct. The easiest way to test this would be with some sort of standard (like a 10-centimeter iron rod) that is measured repeatedly within the locket's area of effect. From there, I can see three possible results:
1) The measurements average out to about 10 cm.
2) The average suffers from a significant error.
3) Every time somebody averages the measurements, they get a different result.
Also, I can't help but wonder what long-term exposure to this thing would to do objects and/or people…
I was thinking #2 and #3, together. The locket's variance extends to its own variance…which extends to that level, and so on. Trying to average the measurements and stuff will get you some new, error-filled values, and if you try to average them, you get new ones…and sooner or later, you realize you're not getting anywhere.
But hey, if you're lucky, you not get any errors at all for a while.
But you can't be sure.
