You simultaneously resurrected Cloudzilla and made a nice Bermuda Triangle SCP. Good show.
Bermuda Triangle cloud entity, I like this. Better than some explanations regarding the area.
Scorecard of Bermuda Triangle explanations:
- Seafloor methane gas pockets: meh
- Aliens: A bigger cliche than radiation creating superpowers
- Potentially sentient weather system that eats planes and ships: YES
Indisputable winner: SCP-605.
Edit @ Unimport: Yes. Yes we do. (Within reason. Like the test of SCP-698 on 682 being the cause of the LHC breaking is an example of Doing It Right, while "poking a globe that affects the earth caused Hurricane Katrina" is definitely Doing It Wrong, not to mention #19 in the cliche list.)
Eh. I like this a lot as an SCP. I like it a lot less as an explanation for the Bermuda Triangle. Do we really have to be behind every mysterious occurrence in recent history?
I'm curious about why people like this one and not the original. Is it the tone, was the original too over the top…? Not knocking this one, it's fine, I just can't remember any substantive differences besides that this one is short and sweet and less OMG. Of course the problem might be that I am going by memory and don't have a copy of the other one to compare.
As I recall, Cloudzilla wasn't really containable at all, and had a weird object in its heart. This, while not containable, can at least be fed so as to leave the mundanes alone.
Well the original flew around attacked Foundation planes and installations on it's own will, which was a little silly. Plus, this one is grounded in a real life thing. Now I didn't hate the original, I even upvoted it because sentient weather is a neat concept. This one is somewhat better though.
A bit of a personal litmus test for bad SCPs for me is "dangerous for the sake of being dangerous" - danger is far from the be-all and end-all of horror. The previous Cloudzilla definitely gave me that vibe, but this one has the far better feel of "dangerous and somewhat unpredictable, but reasonably safe if you're not stupid".
My one and only complaint here is that the Bermuda Triangle implication is so obvious that the "███████ ████████" may as well not be blacked out at all. If that one element was at least slightly more vague you'd have my full support.
It has taken me quite a while to decide whether to downvote this article on top of expressing my opinion or let it be. In the end I've chosen the former, that said I like the concept and I'm sure it could be improved.
Anyway, what I do not like about this article:
- it obviously refers to the Bermuda Triangle yet blanks out the name
- it refers to a real-life (or as close as it can get to it, considering we're talking about the Triangle here) event/phenomenon, which I personally do not like
- it reads as if the Foundation had pretty much given up on studying this SCP
- it tells us about all those difficulties, uncontainability being of course one of the major ones - and just expects us to believe in them
- what is "semi-active state" anyway?
To me, this article just seems kind of… bland. I'm not sure if its the way it is described, the fact that "we don't know how it does it, but it makes things disappear" feels like a bit of a cop-out, or that it seems to be a pretty straightforward adaptation of the Bermuda Triangle myth without anything interesting to separate it from any other Bermuda Triangle story. Actually, it is probably a combination of the three.
