A skip about being stuck on aeroplanes, claustrophobia, and burning.

Yes, this is intended to tie in at least a little to SCP-2539's Miriam Wells and what her ultimate fate was. Spoiler: she's forever trapped in transportation hell.

Grace Renfield is stolen from In Case You've Ever Wondered..., partially because it's an underrated tale and partially because of the thematic chords between an airplane filled with Miriam Wells clones and a woman who's a clone herself. Also because Nanku from Samsara would probably try to murder her fellow passengers.

A lot of this doesn't seem to make sense. People have to spend 2 hours at the gate to be affected, but it only affects flights landing there? So they have to spend 2 hours at the gate and then go somewhere else, and then get a flight heading to that airport and landing at that gate?

And how could they possibly make out individual roads or cars from 270km away? And would a person really be able to be unconscious for the entire length of the flight without being discovered before landing? I'm doubtful. Not sure I understand why the whole thing with the ticket to a different place being used is necessary either.

Same thoughts on this. Maybe I'm just stupid, but the back story doesn't make much sense to me. Did she get burned alive in her patrol car when she went missing? Or did she die some other way? I didn't really get it. This, and combined with the lack of an interesting anomaly for me to get hooked into, really sealed my downvote.

Rambling noises below:

• A quick Google tells me that flights on average fly at an altitude of 10 kilometers, as opposed to the extremely large 270. An altitude of 270 kilometers would mean you've gone outside the thermosphere, i.e. you're in space now, kids. There's something very wrong with whatever space Renfield's found herself in.
• Depending on how long the flight is, I could handwave it as the other passengers thinking she's just fallen asleep on a red-eye flight. Until they land and then she doesn't wake up, at which point in time the awkwardness of waking a stranger up is overcome by the fact said stranger might be dead.
• It'll activate when you spend 2 hours at the gate before catching a flight there.

The reason for all the burning and the smoke on the plane is that Miriam Wells is in the transportation afterlife. From long desert roads to airports, Miriam's forever stuck in the liminal spaces: the bits between the start and the end of your journey.

To repent for whatever she did to incur this punishment, she takes up penance: serving other people as part of her job as every single attendant on the flight. But for those who might find themselves in transportation hell because of what they did, whether that be take the wrong road or board the wrong flight, she'll act as a warning for to the troublemakers about what they might see in the transportation afterlife.

tl;dr Miriam Wells is the psychopomp of plane trips.

With the changes made to the landing/departing wording and realising what a red-eye flight is (never heard the term before), that's cleared up enough for me to change my vote.

I, too, will be removing my downvote. Not for the explanation itself and the backstory, because, maybe it's just me, I just don't find that to be scary or particularly interesting, but because you created a fucking subreddit for this. That, my friend, is dedication towards a good joke.

Interesting way to tie the Miriam Wells character into a different setting (or settings, I suppose, since the flights can go a lot of places). I'll admit that I like 2539 better than this, if anything due to it being more up my alley with respect to horror.

Still, the log is a neat read and the spectacle of seeing a bunch of clones of the same dead highway patrol officer is unsettling enough for me to up vote.

This was inspired by reminiscences of vacations and remembering that I had to spend the majority of the time on the flight witnessing the spectacle that is my brother vomiting for nigh-on the entirety of the time he wasn't sleeping.

Assistant Researcher Renfield was discovered to have passed out from apparent hypoxia

I feel like 'passed out' isn't very scientific, maybe 'lost consciousness' would be better?

Still, this is a really excellent article with a lot of mystery and plenty of weirdness. +1!
