I like it. The writing is clear and clinical, and gets the point across effectively. The concept itself is also quite nice - the bit at the end really makes it, for me. It takes this out of "Things what make you go crazy" (though not for certain), and implies the possible presence of ghosts that want to but are unable to communicate or affect their environment in any way.
I like the idea of this one, I just have one little suggestion.
The rod cells in the eye are responsible for light/absense of light detection, while the cone cells are responsible for colour detection. You can't keep the ability to distinguish between light and dark if the rods are gone.
My suggestion is, why not have all vision destroyed by the SCP, only to return later?
That would be my misunderstanding. I thought that there were a separate kind of photoreceptor cells responsible just for light/dark detection, but you're correct. Besides, total loss of vision is a bit creepier.
Thanks to all for upvoting.
I like it. There are a few places where the language could be tightened up a bit, but a nice idea overall.
When I first read this, my main misgiving was that it tried to confirm the existence of ghosts, at least in-universe. But I reread it and changed my mind, as there could be an alternate explanation (such as psychic emanations from the doctor in the addendum), not just that the place is haunted. Upvoted.
Yeah, that's the main alternative explanation I had i mind, some sort of psychic impression from the doctor. I tried to be less than specific.
i love that something that makes you hallucinate ghosts and then kills you and shrivels your eyes up is Safe by Foundation standards.
It's safe because it can be easily contained and it's effects are really only activated when someone tries to activate it. That's what Safe SCPs are defined as. There's some pretty dangerous stuff in the SCP articles, but because they can be contained without extensive effort to resist their effects and don't activate by themselves, they're classified as Safe.
Not bad, although the predatory aspect at the end feels like an "add-on" effect just to up the creep factor. Absorbs the eye fluid irregardless of distance? It is an SCP I suppose.
Everything about this was boring and bored me until the last addendum
I like how it seems like a "thing what kills you" until you realize that it's a ghost viewer, that is pretty cool.
pastarasta1 is quick-talking and often scheming
And then it still kills you.
(sorry for the necropost)
This one honestly doesn't have much that interests me, and the tone is off. What exactly does it mean that it's "made of a sturdy material?" And how is it that it's effects are still present when one cannot see the object, but opaque materials block them?
